I can't vote (no Facebook) but my wife can, and it's all about getting the vote out.

If DP is in 5th place, wonder why it's still in the "Other" list.

I think when you set up a poll on a Facebook page, you choose the order of the choices, and to see more that the first five, you have to click to see more. So, that must mean that the person at S.O.S. chose that particular order.

Well I actually had a very nice chat last time with someone at S.O.S. at the last NAMM show. Ironically, every year, the S.O.S. booth is set up right across the aisle from the MOTU booth, so it's not like they're not aware of DP.

I think they're purely interested in numbers. It doesn't matter to them what the breakdown of pros versus hobbyists is, or even if it's an expensive DAW or another DAW that is in essence given away for free with a simply nag screen for CP. All that matters to them is what they *perceive* the DP user base to be. They obviously don't perceive it to be all that much.

I never understand how these polls are supposed to be valuable anyway. Unless you are constantly keeping up on these sites, you're not going to know about them, and I suspect most of the people who frequent this board are often too busy *working* to hear about all these polls.

I guess it does tell them what the readership that's engaged with them on FB uses. Useful for them i.e. to figure out which articles to specifically promote there. And of course useful for Facebook's advertisers... (magazines must hate having to have a presence there. Talk about feeding somebody else's piggy bank.)

I took the opportunity to "like" them there so SOS shows up in my feed.

As for "sabotaging" the poll, don't see how registering the DAW you actually use in a poll could be considered sabotage. That said, I don't think it makes much sense to try and "vote early and often", either. So I politely disagree that it's about "getting the vote out". It's about giving them an accurate picture of what's being used.

I'm not on FB so I can't vote,or I would. But here is an excerpt from an e-mail I received from Allen and Heath regarding a tech support query I sent them about MIDI implementation between a ZED R 16 and DP 7.24.

"I'm afraid I can't help with Digital Performer, we have next to no requests from customers using it so I doubt it is something we could look at supporting in the future if I'm totally honest. I've found it really hard trying to ascertain what protocols DP supports, i can only find in forum posts about HUI, i couldn't find any documents from MOTU.

The ZED sends out standard MIDI so perhaps an email to MOTU or a post in one of the MOTU forums might be a good place to start."

I guess this really indicates DP's lack of presence in the UK and perhaps Europe as well.

I treasure the fact that I'm using a DAW that not everyone is using, and many don't even know it exists. It makes DP that much more special to me, because I know how great it is. I like surprising people who think I use something else. It brings a specialness and uniqueness to our studio.

I understand there's a feeling like we're helping to ensure DP's future (or at least its ongoing development) by voting for it and promoting it participating in these online clickfests, but are we really? I highly doubt it. My bigger fear (not that it's based on anything other than my paranoia) is that DP will get dumbed down as more people come to use it. Have you read some of the feature requests? More and more users want a DAW that does all the thinking and mixing for them. F--- that! I can't stand that drone-like mentality, and I won't use any DAW that promotes it.

Soon there will be DP for PCs. That will bring enough growth, but even more inane requests. I hope MOTU does not bow to the pressure of 1-knobers.

Hi from the UK! It is true that DP hasn't broken into the market here really. I'm a musician by day and of course everyone knows logic and cubase etc but not a single person I work with has even heard of DP. I don't think it helps that the main distributor of motu gear here doesn't seem the best to choose (cant remember the website but it looks from out of the 90s...)
No major uk music shops sell it. Not even amazon.co.uk.
From my personal experience when I first got my copy of DP I actually had to buy it from Spain on eBay because I literally couldn't get one here. Even on eBay.co.uk right now there's only one competitive copy for sale and that's it. Not even a standalone. For the whole country!
It's not marketed at all here and even if it was you wouldn't be able to easily get a copy!

Similar over here in Germany, but a little bit better still.
It was really exciting, when I got my copy of DP6 (have been a Logic user before).
But I am more than happy now.

Anyway, that is the ranking right now (over at SOS):

1. Logic - 162
2. Cubase - 153
3. ProTools - 129
4. Digital Performer - 87
5. Ableton Live - 77

SOS has written about DP in the past (reviews and so on) and will most likely continue to, when there is actual DP news, I'm sure. (When DP runs on Windows, you'll hear about it.). They are not likely to be using an unregulated poll to determine editorial content ("no point in writing about MOTU since they got so few votes on our FB page... Let's just write about the top two!") They are merely gauging the effectiveness of their own social media strategy, finding out if the people's who "like" them are engaged or just passers-by. If they were offering a prize for likes and comments, then you'd know they were trying to grow their "friends" base.

Misinterpreting the reason for the poll is the source of much of the angst here. And who gives a f#%k what anybody at GearSlutz says about anything?

I know plenty of people who are NOT on Facebook (including me), by choice for various reasons, including privacy issues. I realize it's popular, but using FB for a poll and thereby excluding people kinda sucks IMO. Why not put this poll on their web site where everyone can access it? I guess it's all about marketing, numbers and the whole "Like Us!" mentality.

I'll state again, it's not a "like us" mentality. For better or worse (the utterly p ointless debate n that subject can rage on betweeen the digi-geeks and the neo-luddites forever without any effect on the March of Progress), social media like Facebook has become a big part of advertising, and in this case SOS doesn't care how many votes each software program gets: they are only interested in how many votes the POLL gets, because they're gauging whether or not they are engaging their "friends.". That's why the poll isn't on their website. They want to know if Facebook is working for them.
