Also you'll notice iLife is not installed with a clean install of retail SL DVD.

But if updating from original Leopard 2 DVD set Garage Band is Logic lite and perhaps if one could slave it via rewire, waves 9 supports Garage Band above a certain version. New it came with iLife, Leopard version MBP '08.

Leopard is a beautiful animal too bad it is attached to that OS.

The other option for those with this issue is holding 'option' key while booting. You'll see your boot OS in a square box, then stick in DVD and click the rescan button on left (curved arrow) if it then doesn't spit out retail SL DVD then try clicking the down arrow to boot off the SL DVD.

You should be prompted for a firmware password.

As long as you didn't dual partition GUID and HFS+ for SL and Leopard/Tiger compatibility you should be good to go. Turn on Firewall. Sharing off. In sharing prefs pane go to advanced, turn on Stealth, block UDP, ignore logging. Turn if off.

Never heard that about the freezer and DVD repair. I know you can use Hair Spray as in Spinal Tap, but just to remove sharpie ink, as the big hair days are over... thanks to the Clash.

But first deal with Spotlight indexing. Set it quickly to ignore most everything except sys prefs. Or I drag my drives into the privacy window in spotlight, indexing is then off per drive or folder (threads appear as MDS in Activity Monitor).

Are you updating to 10.6.6 and stopping there or going to 10.6.8?
I wish I understood some of that. :?

GUID? HFS? I wouldnt know the firmware password if it hit me in the face. What programs does iLife consist of? I certainly dont need Garageband on this machine.

I went all the way to 10.6.8. Why do you ask?

I corresponded with a retired dup facility engineer. He said 'they' always burned a clean copy first with error correction at 1x. Often the Sharpie Pen Ink causes bit errors to be read as a 0, when it is a 1. So the ink must first be cleaned off with hair spray.

Why it is better to use Pink Sharpie Ink and only write on the outer perimeter of Verbatim Archival Media or Tayo Yuden (JVC). Maxell optical media proceed at your own risk.

HP sometimes re-brands Tayo Yuden media if there is a thick plastic spindle with a threaded end. Staples once sold it. It is made in Japan. However they don't yet make Dual Layer (DL DVD+R).

Avoid DL DVD-r. However single layer DVD-r is best, just +r for DL (8 gigs)

DVD Dual Layer laser burns are so tiny even one scratch can ruin it. Why Mike mentioned the Freezer tip (which is new to me).

SL retail disk is a DVD dual layer.

iLife is iPhoto and garageband (logic lite) + some other useless apps IMHO.

I dislike iPhoto because it eats disk space.

Rhythm, you are a veritable fount of information. Unfortunately you are talking to someone with but a fraction of the savvy you possess, so most of it sails several feet above my head. You use shorthand I dont understand, technical terms I only vaguely comprehend (bluetooth advertising?) but it doesnt matter. Your suggestion that I reset the firmware did the trick, and for that alone I am grateful.

FYI, the machine in question wont be used for music; I tell you this because I dont want to see you waste any more of your time typing furiously for my benefit.

Thanks again

I'm consolidating regions and converting down to 44.1K in Tweakhead mode.

Option key (hold it down) as you power up your computer. Holding down the option key temporarily halts the boot process, then you can choose to boot off an External drive, or DVD, but the clone on the external drive must be on a GUID formatted Hard Disk. (as in a SuperDuper clone)
