Zed, I've reached the same conclusion. A consolidated window containing the main window I'm working in, with one of maybe two other smaller things I need with it works well (e.g. a SE or TO, audio monitor and a track strip for tracking). If you don't crowd them they are visually close to individual windows. But the advantage for me is everything redraws exactly as it should. I've been trying window sets without the CW over the past couple of weeks, and several windows including TO, SE, and MIDI monitor rarely redraw as saved, while the Mixer, Drum Editor, and Graphic Editor and Meters do.
The fact that redraws work for some suggests to me that it is dependent on the graphics hardware or drivers in the specific Macs used. Maybe this will be fixed in 8.
