It's not just you.
I do recall there is a "classic view" option in Mail in Lion. I still switched back to SL.

Thanks for the info, James. I was unaware of that. That's good to know. I know it's inevitable that I'll be upgrading eventually, but since everything is working so well for me right now, I just can't see why I'd want to change my system at the moment.

It's been so long since I had to reinstall an OS I've gone brain dead on it.
Does it get rid of things other than the system? I wouldn't think it would touch my documents or apps. Right?

The OS reinstall should not touch your apps as long as you don't wipe the drive. I will assume you do make backups of some sort? If not, you should do that first.

The bestest way to do all this is to get a clean (preferably new) hard drive and format it for Mac (extended Journaled - not case sensitive) and do the Apple install. Then install all you apps and plugs, etc. This can be the hardest part. Finally, drag you documents over.

If you absolutely must use the same drive, do a clean install, preserving the old system folder (I don't know if Lion does that or not - I'm guess it doesn't but I really don't know). Many programs write invisible file that don't just drag over, but if you've kept reasonably good records of your passwords, code keys, and such, you shouldn't have a terrible time authorizing stuff. Also, some apps require online authorization (like Finale and Adobe products) and you might have to contact the developers for new codes since the authorizations are tied to machines and sometimes to specific hard drives. Those kinds of authorizations usually happen in a matter of minutes but a day at most.

But look at it this way...

When you are done, you will have a clean machine, very clean!
