You know, The Motunation community is very lucky I never posted details about the annoying startup ritual I go thru each morning

Sigh. I'll answer the question in spite of all the sturm und drang:
In my experience, DP doesn't like it when the interface tries to change state during startup or in the background. I see this all the time when the project is set to a different sample rate than the audio interface on launch. (ie: the interface at startup defaults to 48k and I open a project at 44k. Substitute relevant numbers as necessary.) So DP's audio engine will tell the interface driver to switch the interface to the current sample rate as it launches, then as it continues through the boot process, the interface is in some transitional state and not responding, so MAS vomits.
The cure is to check the audio interface's sample rate and make sure it's set to match the rate of whatever project you're about to open BEFORE you boot DP, so that it doesn't have to change state.
Now, this may be unique to certain drivers, I don't know. But this happens with my Presonus every single time there is an SR mismatch between DP and the interface. Every. Single. Time. I mostly work in 44k, and the presonus defaults to 48k on boot, so if I forget to check and change the sample rate, Boom!
There. All better now?

no, no ...., you need to get even better at it.....you need to become a...(wait)....(wait)....."PRO" - tool!!!
But seriously, Murphy (OP), (if you're still around), you actually did get your answer in that first response, i.e. all of us DP/PTools users (with pre-PTools9) know that the Digi Core Audio drivers - for use on things like the 002 - are crap and we've been wrestling with startup "anomalies" similar to the one that you described for years. I'm guessing you're Digi CAD is ver. 8, (if you're using LE8). You *could* consider upgrading to PT 9 or 10 and get the more updated drivers, but there's no guarantee that will resolve your situ. You may or may not know that Digi will be dropping 002 usability with PTools 11, so if you're going to wind up with that PTools version, you're in the market for a new interface anyway, you might consider one that plays happier with DP

Zed, Wheever, and Williemeyer,
Thank you so much for your input! I watched the sample rate display on the 002 (for the first time ever) as I booted up DP. The default sample rate is 44.1 on the 002. The sessions I'm opening are 44.1 as well. Anyway, as I opened DP, the sample rate display on the 002 switched to 48 khz!...then I got the warning message I listed (that makes sense). I don't know why it's trying to switch, but it is. From that point I went through the "ritual" and opened the session the way I have since DP5 (the scenic route).
As I said in my initial post, this has been a "minor annoyance". It, in no way, impedes my use of the program...and once it's up and running it is totally solid.
I'm looking at PT 10 now (in the not-too-distant future), and along w/that will probably come a new interface as well. Any suggestions?? I assume the MOTU stuff plays well w/DP...right??
Thanks again....especially for being civil.

Civility starts with civility.

Once I go through the "ritual" DP works great, absolutely rock solid..
Isn't there anyone out there that uses digi hardware and has found a solution for this???

Hmm. Any chance you have DP set to 48k by default? It's in the audio prefs somewhere. Same panel where you set the default bit rate and format by app/project, I think. What happens if you launch DP by opening a 44k project from the finder?
The only other reason I can think that the 002 would be switching is--as so many others have said in this thread--the driver is crap. That's all I got.
