CD burning software other than Toast

I went to my test drive, trashed my copy of 10.0.8. I found a download of 11.0.4 and installed it using my serial number. The Gain column was present.

Either it imported from my 10.0.8 or the download 11.0.4 file I found had it. The reason I did this was that, earlier, I upgraded to 10.0.4 directly instead of from a download.

I then trashed 11.0.4 and installed my 11.0.0.1 release - again, it was there.

The only other thing I can do to test is to do a clean install of Lion then a clean install of Toast 11. I am curious but not that curious.

If you had Toast 10 installed, I don't know why it didn't pick up. If you didn't have 10 installed, I would find a copy, run it in demo mode, trash and reinstall 11.

Maybe this is like Catholic school: It's a mystery.

Mystery solved.

In Toast 11, (and maybe in previous versions, too, I was updating from v., in Preferences, under "Audio," there is a check box labeled:

"Show advanced audio mastering settings."

The default is (or at least was in my install) "unchecked."

And when you check it, the "Gains" column appears in the Audio CD list window. This seems to be the only change to the window: apparently being able to add AU plug-ins and create crossfades is commonplace, but adjusting the gain of a track is "Advanced."

So, that's how it works. And nobody whom Roxio has trained to do their abysmally bad off-shore tech "support" knows this. They will tell you, on the phone and in e-mail, that you cannot do this in Toast. That feature does not exist. I do not know what you are talking about. (Fingers in ears) Lalalalalalalalalala.......

Well, it was a real head-meets-brick-wall discovery process, so I'm glad it finally led to an actual solution.

I mean, the checkbox isn't even labeled with what it will do! And Roxio has, seriously, no kidding, the absolute WORST tech support in the entire history of the telephone.

but the upside is... I've got FreeG, and now have a choice as to how to handle the process. AS clunky as it is, the Toast controls are better in one regard: my FreeG insertions and settings were NOT saved with the Toast file.

Wow, there it is, alright. Checking and unchecking makes it appear or go away.

Yes, ROXIO has the worst support - and v.8 was the worst version ever!

During this process I found out that the last version of 7 still works in Lion and 10.0.8 is solid as a Rock. I never really used 9 although I have two copies.

Toast 11 has some nice features for video. For audio, I haven't used the feature that allows me to burn two audio CDs at once - yet - but am looking forward to trying it out.

The included CD Cover 3 is ok for printing to CD but DiskLabel is absolutely worth the $35.95, IMO. Both import track info from Toast but DL automatically imports from the disk you have up or burning - it doesn't make you find the file, one of the many reasons I like it over CD Cover.

It's too bad that HP no longer offers printers that support CD printing. I have an HP C309a that prints excellent disks in a few seconds in Fast Draft B&W mode and saves me a lot of $$ on ink in the process.
