Re: G5 just died without warning - won't power on

Here's part of the conundrum coming from someone who's had G5 issues of their own.

It's easy and quite understandable to say that one does not want to toss money at a G5. The problem then becomes "the problem". Unless one is then willing to spring for a new machine, then the *value* of buying replacement parts for a G5 takes on a whole new dimension.

I had a 17" G5 PowerBook. The power supply went out, which effectively rendered it as a mere "book". I decided not to have it fixed and bought a new MacBook Pro.

I also have a G5 2.5 dual and decided not to sell it because I didn't want to buy a a second Intel Tower having invested in an Intel Quad already. $200 for a replacement power supply sounds a lot better than $2500+ for a new machine plus the equivalent amount of RAM, PCI-cards, and other peripherals. There were other issues with it than the power supply, but fixing those issues happened to make a lot more sense to me-- contrary to the PowerBook situation.

So my options were one of three:

1. Buy the replacement parts-- and pay a tech if the DIY was beyond my ability.

2. Don't buy replacement parts, but start over with a whole new machine or a refurb.

3. Buy nothing, but take solace in the fact that all of the G5 data was backed up on an external drive, rendering the G5 itself something that wouldn't be missed once out of service.

It becomes quite a triumvirate of considerations where cost, value (or worth), and pragmatism are not so easily reconciled. I wish there were a fourth option to offer, but that's all I have at the moment.
