I just Googled the Finder CPU spike phenomenon and found out that a lot of users found out that clearing their desktop helped the situation considerably.
I'll try that next and report back.

Clearing everything from my desktop didn't help.
Unplugging firewire peripheries didn't help either.
I'm gonna try out Appcleaner and get rid of more programs.

Personally, if I bought a 'puter from someone, I would wipe the drive and fresh install everything.

When I recently setup my new used MacPro,the 1st thing I did was install SL on a new drive and installed everything, yes it took some time but so far no problems.

Something to try is to open Font Book in Applications. Look for duplicate fonts - in 10.5 it will be a black bullet to right; in 10.6, it will be a yellow triangle. If you find any...
In 10.5, Select All then click on Resolve Duplicates. In 10.6, Select Duplicate Fonts then click on Resolve Duplicates.
If you have this problem, it will make booting faster - sometimes by a lot. I have heard of instances where it increased performance overall.
Recently, I did this on all computers I take care of. Not one 'puter didn't have this problem to one degree or another. YMMV.

I'll check out the Font suggestion and if all else fails then yes I'm probably looking at a complete new install.
thanks,
