Can't see you're screen? I can see my screen in CA when I'm in NY, TX, or watching an unzipped maestro in ME. (Inside joke. Actually, more of an outside joke!)

And my point is... um... I'll remember..., oh yeah, THIS:

http://www.iteleportmobile.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's not that I am totally against iStuff, just not as the o/p described his needs. But the iTeleport app works really great on a local network. Wouldn't be without it! Like having your Mac wherever you are (as long as it's turned on. Which brings me back to those cigarettes!

Oh, and did I mention that iTeleport let's you view Flash content on your Apple mobile device?

I was in session all day yesterday and missed most of this thread. Now I really feel like a luddite not wanting to jump on the iThing (or Facebook) bandwagon. My wife has a celphone. I like land-lines. Call me hard-headed, I've been called worse!
I have a long USB cable with a repeater built in I could use for this. I'll give it a try later and use that for the time being. I was trying to keep things tidy as we'll be shooting a lot of video in this room but one more cable isn't going to make any difference. Luckily I can see my large screen OK in the corner for everything I need to know I think.

How would I use my aging Macbook as a controller - can that be done (as Dwetmaster maentioned)? I don't know the first thing about doing that but I'll do some research. Never thought of that possibility at all....

thanks again for the ideas!

You could always throw marbles and hope they land on the right (or left) keys.

I was thinking more of a really long stick actually.

I'm going to figure out the Macbook screen share thing, except I want to upgrade it to SL (from Tiger) first so both computers are on the same OS... and then I remembered the MacBook DVD drive is broke (every laptop I've ever owned the drives have broken) so I just ordered a replacement drive. Chain reactions... I thought this would be the cheap solution - oh well. It will be nice to have the drive working again so I can watch my Girls Gone Wild DVD's at the beach. If we had one.

If I remember correctly, you need at least 10.5 for screen sharing (without using extra software at least). You just go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Turn on Screen Sharing. Both computers need to be connected via network obviously.

But if you can see the monitor pretty well from where you sit, a wireless keyboard might actually be an easier solution. But also an extra expense as you already have the MacBook.

And I was poking fun at him for sounding so stubborn in his refusal to get any iThing ;-)

Haha, that pic is a few years old, knowing myself back then there could be just about anything in that cigarette. I'm more selective these days ;-)

You mean seductive, don'tcha? LOL

Now if you get "caught" in California with 1/4 oz or less you get a $100 fine. Period. No criminal record, no jail, yadda yadda yadda... EXCEPT if you get caught by the Feds. Then it's off to the big house!

A few years back, I used the Apple Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard as a cheap remote. Then I moved to the new keyboard, for which there is no keypad on the wireless. I recently read in another thread here about the LMP Bluetooth Keypad (WKP-1314) for the Mac. It copies the style of the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and even comes with a little clip that joins them together so you can sort of carry them around as one. (that clip is not strong enough to resist a lot of force, so you have to be careful) It's not as perfectly elegant a solution as would be an Apple keyboard with keypad built-in; in other words, I'd rather have a complete Apple Wireless Keyboard, but that's not an option, thanks to Steve Jobs' conviction that he knows better than we do what we need (which is often right, but dead wrong in this case). But given that there is no perfect option, this keypad genuinely is the next best thing.

There is only one major drawback, which most people won't notice at all: you can't use modifier keys (command, option, control, shift) with any key on the keypad. They are separate keyboards, so the modifier from one cannot act upon the keys of the other. I happen to use a lot of those commands, so it IS a problem, but less of one than having no keypad at all.

[optional paragraph if the previous one was important to you] If you have QuicKeys, you can use "sticky keys" to trigger an action with multiple commands. So, I could preface any key on the keypad with, say, COMMAND-OPTION-CONTROL-C, then it would wait for the next key, which would be, say, ENTER. (Enter and Return are not the same, btw, and this keypad treats them separately in true Mac fashion) In this way, I can retain the large number of keypad shortcuts that I use normally on a full-size keyboard.

Anyway, I recommend the keypad for a remote, If all you need is transport, you don't even have to carry the keyboard around. Just the keypad. Very handy!

Thanks Shooshie.
I found that in OWC's catalog a couple of days ago too and was considering it.
Thanks for the heads up on the modifier keys, too. Good to know!

I agree that iPad is totally the way to go today. I have my studio sharing the main recording room with 9 other studios and that main room is downstairs for me. So having a wifi app on ipad would be amazing cool. Unfortunately DP Control is only for iPhone and while it "works" on ipad its pretty crappy in that it forces you to use the real estate of an iphone screen and doesnt actually have any features that make ipad worthy. Not to mention that you can only use 100 tracks on DP Control so most of my templates are out the window. I am on a serious hunt to find a wifi interface app for ipad that really owns on DP. For now I am just going to use Pro Tools 9 and use the very cool V-Control Pro. I bought Touch OSC but I have no time to create a complete custom iteration to work with my DP setup. Anyone know if DP is planning to build out DP Control to work with iPad? Or any other iPad suggestions?
FutureLegends wrote:You should just get with it and get an iPhone/iPad. Not only are they great gadgets but the DP Control app is pretty much exactly what you are looking for. My studio partner was in the same situation as you, often recording himself drumming and having to run back and forth between the control room and the drums in the recording are. When I showed him the DP Control app he was amazed and now uses it all the time...
Hell, if you really want to avoid them, get a used iPod Touch and use it only as a DP remote...

Try the Frontier Tranzport (yes, correct spelling) wireless remote control. It works great and even goes through walls. Works great with DP.

cheers! :D
