I was messing around a while ago to see what kind of horsepower was there in the 12-core. I was able to load 36 stereo tracks, each track had both an Altiverb and a Waves L316. hehe 36 Altiverbs and 36 L316's is a lot of demand on the cpu. DP handled it with no problems and played it back all cleanly. I could have gone further but I didn't see the point. btw, ProTools 9 could only do 28 tracks with those same plugins and still play cleanly.

Here's a video of that test. You can see DP using over 1100% of CPU, and Activity Monitor is showing fairly equal distribution of work across all the cores:

(the video was done on a 30" monitor, so the screen size of the video is large. On a small monitor, you may have to zoom out to see the whole window. At least I had to, on my laptop.)

My advice is to always buy the fastest, latest machine you can afford. You won't have to upgrade your computer as often, which is always a huge pain in the neck. Honestly, for me, the biggest hold up in DP at this point is it not being 64-bit yet. There's tons of horsepower in today's machines. Now we need access to all the RAM. I truly believe all my crashing issues are related to pushing the current 32-bit RAM limitations too hard. I guess we need the plugin manufacturers to become 64bit as well.

Apple is just asking way too much for the 12 cores IMHO.
The new laptops are priced more in perspective and hopefully the new Mac Pros will come down in price.
I'm running 2Ghz. ram and the video card is way better than apples offerings too.
I'd rather spend the $$ on conversion.
OTOH... light peak seems very promising but most MOBO manufacturers will implement it soon enough so...

I used MA because I had to get back to work fast. I was planning on going back and building from scratch, but all is working great. I'm going to do it though on another internal drive so i can take my time.
