Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
Nevermind, I found it. Here is a link explaining what it is putting on the computer and how to get rid of it. I have not done it yet as I am deathly afraid of deleting things that I know nothing about.

amplidood,
How do you hide the menu bar? (I thought that ability died with Mac OS.)

I had to download the Developer Toolkit also but then it worked. Neat trick!

Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
Sounds like a great trick - will it work in Leopard if I install the appropriate XCode? I noticed that the download link referenced in the thread specifies 10.6, but think I recall seeing some other things on my Leopard install discs.

Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
Xcode 3.2, the current version requires OS 10.6.x to install.
For 10.5.x, you need to find the download for Xcode 3.13. When I tried to find the 3.13 download from within the developer site, I was unsuccessful.
However, I found a few ways to do it by doing a Google search for "Xcode 3.1 download". All paths now took me to the Apple Developer site where, after logging into my account, I was able to download and install Xcode 3.13 onto my wife's G4 Mac Mini running 10.5.8. On purpose, I did not quit any apps nor did I reboot after installation (the installer does not require it).
Typing purge in Terminal now worked and it did make a difference on her machine. Her machine it is limited to 1G RAM so freeing up the unused memory made a couple of her apps faster including Word 2008.

Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
Thanks Mike! While I'm now registered as a developer, I didn't manage to find the older download of Xcode on the Apple site. But I did find a version on my install discs, and the purge command is now active like the cultures in my yogurt!
And thanks Andy for the OP!

I forgot about that. Yes, it is on the install DVD, too.
Here is the link I followed. I had to go through a few screens but it took me back to the Apple Developers Site. I logged in again and there it was, ready for download.

Thank you for your kick ass tips! Sorry to slightly hijack the thread...real quick...
I just tried the MenuAndDockless trick and it worked. Then it didn't, at least as far as the Finder is concerned. I was able to hide the Menu Bar in the Finder at one point. Then, I ran Onyx and performed the following functions: repair disk permissions, ran daily, weekly, and monthly scripts, ran the one the clears misc items, i.e., remove old iTunes libraies etc, emptied the trash.
Safari works with M&E btw.
Any idea how to get the Finder to hide it's menu bar again? That was a pretty cool trick. Thanks for the tips and help!

Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
You have to quit and relaunch the Finder for the app to work with it. The only real caveat I've found so far, besides VLC being a bit of pain with it.
Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
Purge command is working fine now, and has its own quickeys shortcut
Thanks!
I´m having a few quirks with menu&dockless. It´s working fine with most programs, not with DP
. The new menu items under window preferences do not show up in DP ( or firefox for that matter but firefox is not set in english, but in spanish, so that could be the reason for it). OSX and DP are english setups though. Without those menu items I can only always have it dissapear or always on, can´t use a keycommand. Still usable, I´d rather have those pixels back, having Keycue installed I get to see most menu commands with a simple keypress too, so I don´t miss the menu bar much.
Two great new tools. Thanks!
My latest addition appart from those two:

Great addition to OSX clipboard, with your own snippets too (Kindda OSX clippings LOL )

Re: Easiest RAM trick *ever*
DP will work with it. Just make sure of these two things...
1. The default behavior of MenuAndDockless is "Start all applications with menubar and dock hidden"
2. DP is set to do nothing when you launch it. If it launches a Open/Save dialogue, it will force the menubar into view.

I'm trying to convince the developers to add another option to disable auto-showing the menubar with a mouseover. I'd like it to be able to be triggered by key command only...

Both set like that.amplidood wrote:1. The default behavior of MenuAndDockless is "Start all applications with menubar and dock hidden"

Sorry for maybe not being clear, it does hide the dock and menu, just doesn´t work with the keycommand, nor does the window menu expand with new MoApp options to add a custom one.

I too like the suggestion of not having mouse hovers show anything, only the shortcut. Sounds much more solid and consistent. At least as an option.
I´d have to set it up properly with DP though
