From apples support site

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard includes a 64-bit kernel. On hardware that supports the 64-bit kernel, you can choose whether to start up (boot) your Mac using the new 64-bit kernel or the earlier 32-bit kernel.

Products Affected
Mac OS X Server 10.6, Mac OS X 10.6, Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
You can use either of these methods:

Method 1: Startup key combination (for current startup only)

If your Mac uses the 32-bit kernel by default, but supports the 64-bit kernel, you can start up using the 64-bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during startup.
If your Mac uses the 64-bit kernel by default, you can start up with the 32-bit kernel by holding the 3 and 2 keys during startup.
Your Mac will revert to the default kernel the next time you reboot it.

Method 2: On-disk setting (persistent)

To select the 64-bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

To select the 32-bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

Note: This setting is stored in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist file and will take effect every time you start up from this disk. If you start up from a different disk, the setting on that disk, or the hardware default, will take effect.

Additional Information
Keys held during startup (such as 3-2 or 6-4, method 1 above) will override the setting in com.apple.Boot.plist (method 2 above).
Note: Learn how to determine whether your Mac can use the 64-bit kernel and which kernel it uses by default.

Just checking in again.. the problem of getting the spinning ball seems to only happen when I put a Waves Plugin on a track or record enable or disable a track that has a waves plug in on it.
Anyone else come across this..
Thanks for any more thoughts.. DP 7.22 is working very will with this exception..
No crashes, just aprox 45 second spinning ball when I do the above.. some Waves Plugins take slightly less to assign, but the record enable and disable take about that long.

I've had sluggish DP issues for a while even with 7.22 sometimes with not that many VI's and my tech friend recommended to do a clean install of my whole computer considering its been a while and in the mean time (2 or so years) that i've installed and downloaded soooo much stuff that who knows whats really going wrong or slowing down certain processes. Admittedly i havent done it yet because of the sheer amount of time it will take to re-install but maybe someone here has done that. Have they found a difference?
i would be fascinated to know!

I'm running Waves latest version on my system, absolutely no problems. I'm
just not having any problems at all with DP 7.2.2. About any "sluggishness",
maybe it's hard for me to tell because my previous machine was a G5, so
my MacPro screams in comparison to that.

The only suggestion I can offer is to uninstall and then re-install Waves.

amplidood wrote:The migration is the worst thing Apple has ever come up with. Yes it's nice for people to try and have all their prefs come up in their apps so it's like nothing ever left. But it's a very, very, very bad solution. I'm now convinced Apple doesn't do things to make their systems iron clad. It's called planned obsolescence, but that's another rant...

I've fixed numerous systems where people had bought brand new machines and did the migration. The problem is that it brings over all preference and system related files from the old machine. These files are not meant to be on the new machine, but Apple doesn't care about that. These poor folks' computers ran slower and worse than the old system did. Every time I had them do full backup of the old system with CCC, and then start from SCRATCH with a new install of MacOS. This is a longer process, but you get a machine that actually works.

It's not so bad with careful planning, it just takes some time to do it right. Every system I've done this on (along with my dual partition repair setup, and rigid backup plan) sails on smoothly and I rarely hear any more technical complaints. I've been thinking about going into business setting up people's Macs to run the way they were meant to. Apple's no different than any other company. They like people to keep buying services and hardware.

+ 1 agree

using Migration assistant for transferring data from a G5 PPC to a IntelMac sounds like a very bad idea. There are too many potential conflicts.Programs written for pre Intel Macs had to be revised for Intels, the preferences as well as the actual programs are totally different. I suggest wiping the drive and start all over.

So have taken everyones thoughts and done the following to no change.. Installed 10.6.6 on one of my internal drives.. clean install nothing on the drive.. installed DP7.22 and associated drivers, Waves (latest waveshell) and USB Overdrive (to work with Kensington Expert mouse).
Opened a new session and was able to load MOTU plugins almost instantaneously..unfortunately Waves PLUGS took long time.. L1+Ultramimizer on a stereo track.. 44 seconds.. C4 mono on a track about 35 seconds.

Thank you again for all your thoughts and ideas.. anyone have any other things I Might try.. system is very stable and does not crash, only issue seems to be the slow Waves load time.
Best
Mike

Maybe it's time to call Waves about this. Your issue is really really
strange. As you can see from the replies, most everyone else is not having
any slow-loading issues with Waves.

Don't have Waves, they might recommend something else...
But I would get the latest version of drivers for the iLok.
