As an fyi - the Apple Store is down for refresh right now (and has been for some time I gather). Could this be the day for MacPro's?

Update - Apple Store is now open again and there's good news and bad news. Good news - new MacPro's coming in August. Bad news - 12 cores starting at $4999. Good news - SSD drives will now be a build-to-order option. Apparently there will still be both quad and hex core machines available as the line-up will have 4, 6, 8, or 12 cores. See this link:

Great to know when I'll be getting my new toy..lol...
So the question is, who here knows much about the new solid state drives and if they are worth the added cost?

The blog at the MacRumors site today listed links at newegg etc., showing that the markup is miniscule and is quite generous vs. the labour involved -- though this pertains far more to the iMac models than the MacPro models, so I'm not sure if the same breakdown was done for both.

SSDs are capable of blazing speed compared to mechanical drives - but not all SSDs are created equal.

OK Mike,
so what does that mean?
Are you recommending that I get a strippeddown drive array in the mac and put these drives in?
1) are they better?
2) are they cheaper?

If you follow that link, you will see that there are performance differences among various brands.
No one knows how good the new Apple SSD will be compared to others. Until some have shipped and been reviewed, we won't know either.
The price is about the same: $600 for 265GB from Apple vs $630 for 240GB from OWC. If the Apple performs as well, it's a bargain at today's price. If it performs like brand "I" - or if it is brand "I" - then the OWC is the winner.
Hopefully, someone will write a comparison review that we can trust. Then everybody will know.

I think the Mac Performance Guide link over at the DP forum answers many of these questions.
I've now deleted the sub-links, but the main site is macperformanceguide.com.
It's good to keep in mind though, that they have a financial incentive to sell you a customized Mac.
