DP 7.1 - the best version yet

I've been using 7.1 with Waves Renaissance 5.9.7 and have had no problems.

then again, I have always liked the number seven much better than six.

Well, I started a thread a while back for troubleshooting DP 7.1, and it just petered out. That's a good thing!

Since I installed the new MOTU FW drivers, all's been well, which makes no sense at all since I'm using an Apogee interface, but I ain't complaining.

DP 7.1 is working great for me. I have yet to have a crash.

Lately I have been testing the boundaries and doing as much editing, adding and removing effects and general mischief as time permits and I still can't make DP 7.1 crash.

In all honesty, though: I found DP7 with snow leopard to be much more stable than DP6 with leopard. I'm still a little bitter that I had to pay to upgrade to a workable system. But DP7 is a lot more stable.

Still crashes from time to time... but it definitely has to do with the 3rd party plugs I'm running. Been reading my crash reports and it usually has to do with Duende Drumstrip or NI Akoustik Piano. Very rarely does it crash and one of those things aren't in the crashed thread.

Then again, I am pushing it to the limits... 48 audio tracks @ 88.2 / 24bit along with 20 aux tracks, and plugs on everything. Mainly the Duende doesn't play nice with Digital Performer, but I just love their Drumstrip!

7.1 is working really well here.
Now my money system.
I love the insert saves.
I think it needs to sit in and hang in for a while and then it becomes very stable.
I did total rescan of all files and it helped immensely.
I give thumbs up for the best version yet.

Waves 5.9.7 isn't guaranteed to work with DP 7.1. It's my guess that it
probably does - but I suggest that you bite the bullet and upgrade to
the latest version of Waves anyway. Here's why - with 5.9.7., the recommendation was to run Waves plugs in "real-time" because otherwise
they'd sometimes crash. That situation is gone with the latest version of
Waves (and if you upgrade, you get a couple of new plug-ins from them).

One caveat - when you upgrade, you will probably have to call Waves support
and get them to deposit the new licenses in your i-Lok account. That's what I had to do, as their website instructions on upgrading your licenses are
really confusing.

There are some 3rd party plugs that can crash DP. When I discover the culprit, I avoid using them in DP or I avoid using them in troublesome circumstances.

I also use ram hungry VIs in Bidule and thus have almost no issues with Kontakt, Play Omnisphere, Superior Drummer etc etc...

All of my apps run better this way. I don't get too many out of memory messages in Logic and the CPU meter in Live stays low. Plus my VIs and processing are portable to other DAWs this way.

Occasionally I get quirks, like the other day when a project opened with old settings. It may not have been saved even though I saved it. There are times when the dirty flag doesn't get set and thus save isn't enabled. I foolishly used the shortcut key anyway, thinking it would execute the save action. Apparently not. So I guess the real problem is that the dirty flag may be having trouble keeping up on a slower machine that isn't quite up to spec. That's my guess for now.

The only other oddities I've noticed are that sometimes clicking on the "Song" view tab crashes DP on my machine, and a couple of plug-ins were missing that didn't show up with errors during Audio Unit validation. But the latter could be a legacy issue with inheriting an older Audio Unit validation cache as the basis for a new pass on validation, and the former is probably just a reflection of my under-specced machine.

Otherwise, I continue to discover new things about version 7.1 (even beyond 7.0) that improve my productivity and workflow.

The advice for newbies to get Logic has become deafening, so I have taken it upon myself to put in extra time to explain to people on other forums why they should give DP 7.1 a look first. The mantra now is that people are already familiar with Garage Band (which I've never used as it isn't on my system), and thus Logic is a "simple" upgrade. Oh well.

I've been running 7.1 for 2 weeks on a new 2.26 8 Core, Snow Leopard 10.6.2. It's been absolutely stable, quick, and didn't take much of an adjustment coming from 5.13.
Congratulations MOTU on keeping us going in the right direction!

I had problems and regular crashes in the beginning, not sure if it was the Omnisphere update or the Apple update for my MACPro (which were said to be over processing audio tasks) but I haven't had a crash since!
Time to clone that drive!
