How do you know?

The clicking sound is a dead giveaway. A sure sign of a hardware disk failure-, not to say that the data is not recoverable.

The clicking sound may also be a drive head trying to seek on a stuck drive platter. That it returns a zero would support that. The electronics are at least reporting the drive exists - in HDs and in people that usually means they're not quite dead yet, but not always (see below).

I don't know if the drive is dead or not, but if it is, dropping it on a desk or freezing couldn't hurt. There's a Sheldon Leonard joke in there somewhere. Maybe a Python as well...

Cause I see 20 dead hdds a day. It's my day job. Symptoms described fit perfectly. The key one about it not showing as formatted and having zero bytes.

Just the same, I guess with out seeing/hearing the drive, I shouldve said it is most likely dead. There is always the off chance that freezing/dropping the drive could unstick, but in my experience, very unlikely. I suggest not doing that if you plan on pursuing any drive recovery.

The Back Up Lesson...

I just had mine a few months back when my main audio drive failed. I was deep in a project and hadn't backed up for two days. I got the data I needed for $565 or so from a local guy, with a new HD thrown in for free, but it would have cost a lot less to maintain a Time Machine backup or RAID Mirror.

There are software tools, generally for PC, that may get your data back for you, but you might better spend the money you'd spend on the software having a pro do the recovery. Clean Room recovery, which could be required, will cost you a lot more.

I have had drives fail to spin up due to failed power supplies in external enclosures, easily overcome with a new power supply, but it sounds like drive death to me too. It is a sad fact of computer life. Drives Fail. It is just a matter of time.

I feel for you bro'.

no worries. i don't really need anything on that drive anyways.

all my projects that i have on that drive have all been bounced down, and i have all the final mixes. i just won't be able to go back and re-mix any of them.

back up lesson has been learned!!
