As for Time Machine, I initially thought it was for people who wouldn't do backups otherwise, but it turns out it's an actual Professional Solution that no one who is computer-savvy need be embarassed to use.
I hope it isn't based on FileVault, is all I can say.
The repository approach is really what most of us need, as it negates the usual problem of backing up bad data.
Most of us don't have time to verify everything we backed up, as there's too much of it. Having incremental backups, like with source code development, is the ultimate protection against snafus.
