That's the paradox-- always has been, but the confusion intensifies as these new features appear that look simple enough on the surface to use. Like e-loo, I put Logic 8's plugins to good use as more of an annex app, then port things back to DP.

Precisely what I was driving at earlier-- that new Logic releases stand as landmarks and inspire new questions about what's next for DP.

That's quite a natural response for any lover of DP. But once again, this release inspires new questions about DP and what's next. There can be some sense that a competing product is getting a little ahead. That may be less true for those who have no use for Logic at all. But for those of us who hold our breath when we grab a handle in case DP goes "poof", it does generate a bit of DAW envy.

There are all the usual considerations, though: which DAW feels better to work with, which looks easier to work with, what features look attractive in a marketing video but are not as easy to deal with as they appear, if what I use could have a little of this and a little of that.... and so on.

But as long as DP is our "bow and sword" of choice, we have to be patient.

It looks awesome. At $499, with a dark gray GUI... what's not to like?

I don't see any mention of it being 64-bit. Is it there somewhere?

Well, I have Logic Express 8 which I hardly use and they want $99 to upgrade (half the original price), so version 8 might be the end of the upgrade road for me there. I really didn't care for working in it. I mean I thought the graphics were slick and it was efficient, but I didn't like working in it.

Yeah, both the Logic and Final Cut updates list Intel as a requirement!

Well, there are now two threads about this so I'll try and figure out how to consolidate them. As I said in the other, I have Logic Express 8 and maybe launched it a few times. Nice graphics and it's CPU friendly, but I just don't like working with it. And I searched Apple's site and they want $99 to upgrade to Logic Express 9 and frankly I don't see something compelling enough about this ugprade to warrant $99 (for me personally).

I do enough work with other professionals who send stuff back and forth to me in Logic, so I will probably jump on the upgrade very soon. The list of new features does look great. Especially CONVERT TO SAMPLER TRACK. That is really a great idea. I can't start to explain how many times I've sliced up a drum part (audio) in DP just so I could re-arrange it like I would with MIDI. Too bad they didn't add any new film scoring features to Logic (at least none that I see on their website). It looks like they are moving more and more into the live performace and arranging direction. Fortunately, DP always has (and I guess always will) be better suited to film scoring.

What makes you think its stable? Mainstage was an unusable POS in the last release. If it worked I wouldn't have written Jambalaya.

I don't know if I'll bother with the upgrade or not. I didn't use the last version at all - couldn't get into it as it didn't work the way my head does (just like Mainstage). Also, they don't have very good support for outboard hardware and they tend to hide the third party AU's in non-obvious menus while showcasing their very slightly below average sounding plugs.

I'm still on DP5 and use Logic 8 Studio. The paradigms are different enough that I'm still not very good with Logic, but I find myself working in it more and more. There's one big fat hairy issue with it for me, though, and that's working with external synths and getting patch names. DP is light years ahead of the game here.

I load up a standard module in DP and all of the patch names are there (and if they're not, it's not hard to get them).

I load up a standard module in Logic and end up learning a whole new vocabulary of curse words as I peel back the lovely and slick GUI and end up down in the septic tank known as The Environment. Yes, I know, it's really powerful and cool and gives you a lot of flexibility, but it still sucks for me. I want to write music, not a device driver. All I want are my damn JV-2080 patch names to show up when I'm browsing the instrument on the track list!!!

Still, I'm a sucker, and I'll probably pop for the upgrade later this year. That said, unless the reports on DP6 start getting a lot better soon, 5.13 may be the end of the line for me. I'm getting old and cantankerous, ya know.

I prefer the audio editing features of DP by far, FWIW.
