Considering the good results here, I figured , hey I need some utility software too. So I went searching...

hmm , read some rather nasties over at macupdate http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17099/drive-genius

then I checked out idefrag-and noticed this interesting FAQ that may attribute the flakeyness of DG : check FAQ#10 here http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag-faq.php

I don't own a G5 ,nor any WD disks, but I thought I'd pass it on.

Seems iDefrag amy be worth the dough, and when DW gets up to snuff.

I did have good results with Data rescue, but that was PPC days with a SCSI drive. Back up with Superduper does it for me. Just nee a defrag app.

Thanks Tonio. Got the package today and ran a few tests - but no defrag for me either.

I use Disk Warrior and Applejack all the time. Disk Warrior is a must have as far as I'm concerned. Both of those are not just thing to have on hand in case of emergency, they are tools to keep things running smoothly, I use them like repairing permissions. DW is something that gets used constantly, I've had Data Rescue for years and only used it once, for something minor.

I've never had, or even seen or heard of, DW causing any problems on a drive. I can't say that about any of the other programs I've used. Sometimes when you have a drive with problems the fixit programs go in and make a hash of it.
