Thanks all! Some very creative solutions here -- expecially you, Pappy. Routing back from DAW! Very clever. But latency on my DAW isn't low enough to really feel comfortable with that. And mono monitoring vs. stereo? Again, digging deep, I like it.

I've heard a lot of trash talking about the ADA8000. I've also heard some surprisingly good reviews. Will have to judge for myself - but as a point of fact, the unit does act as independent 8-channel A/D and D/A units.

The MOTU 828 MKii cannot be configured to do this, because it is limited by the number of CueMix buses.

For the moment, I can make due with 6 stereo output pairs (rather than 8) and with 4 drum inputs (rather than 8).
If I end up buying an ADA8000 or some other unit (like yet ANOTHER MOTU 828) I'll post here.
