I took it to a technician... he said "I doubt it has a fuse in it..." he wanted me to book it in and wait till next week. So I went to Dick Smiths and opened up a couple of packets of alan keys to find the right size... bingo... in the car, I opened it up, and hello behold, a glass fuse!... running back into the store, I find a packet and do an in car operation.

Running several red lights on the way home in anticipation, I take photos... I'm thinking of what to call this solution ... 'the whitehouse principle"

Here is my new fuse and proof that there is a glass fuse in there ;)

Guess what?? I plugged it back in and bling bling bling its a disco of lights on the 8pre.

You put the C for cool in community man. You're the kinda guy that makes an emo (not that I am) muso wanna go out and sing about rainbows in a lovely way. You take the kill out of a killjoy.

Thank you for helping me bro!!!!!!

Well after hearing a couple audio electricians at this store I went to tell me its silly of me to think a glass fuse would be inside these "cheap modern audio interfaces" he said, I was really disappointing thinking it was just going to be a computer inside with nothing a simpleton like me could do to fix this issue.

I wanted to take a photo that captured the dreamy feeling I had when I took the case off and the world blurred around me as I saw the little fuse that was broken (not the new fuse in this photo) :)

Thanks again. I had my first recording session last night at 96kbps and music is a whole different experience now on the computer.

So what were you using before the 8pre? Was it just the built in sound on your computer or another sound card? Just curious

Mbox2 usb. Which was alright at first. But then I upgraded to Leopard and it appears Apple demented the USB setup and could no longer get a smooth recording plus Pro Tools wouldn't load.

I used to run a powerbook setup (now iMac) and I bought the mbox for that. Problem is, they fudged the power configuration and miscalculated how much power the PB could supply so you'd go into Phantom power mode on the Mbotch (I mean Mbox) and it would basically power down. Digidesign offered no fix for this and ran me around in circles for about 9 months with fixes that didn't fix it.

For the last 3 months or so I have been using a very cheap hardware interface going straight into the Linein. Of course the quality isn't as great as a USB audio interface, but the hardware device doesn't drop out at least. Still, the noise sucks from electrical interference inside the computer ont he line-in so that brings me to now :) the 8pre firewire is awesome comparatively :)

Hi
I had exactly the same problem.
I just solved it by switching the unit on whilst holding down the volume button for about twenty seconds. Four orange lights came on and then went off again. I turned the unit off and on again and it it was fine. Give it a go

I spoke too soon. My 8pre is back to the UP display, although sometimes I get E2 followed by E3 and then it dies completely. It's pumping out a nice level of hiss to boot.
Thanks MOTU for your lovely firmware update. Looks like it's ruined mine.
Anyone found a n answer yet?

I have to admit I feel pretty gutted that the firmware that was made and recommended by MOTU caused an issue that I now pay MOTU tech people to fix. I have asked them to reconsider their quote for fixing the unit considering the circumstances. And although the unit was only 6 months old, it still falls out of their 90 day warranty... as of yet they haven 't replied to that request ...

I wonder how many other people have suffered the same issue.

yeah thats pretty bad.

i can imagine your faith in motu has diminished. how are you supposed to feel when you think you're about to get an ugrade and it actually makes your machine inoperable? I think the fair and intelligent thing to do on their side is fix it for free, but more then that, compensate you somehow for your loss... e.g a discount off of a future item... and be grateful you have given them an opportunity to realise what is wrong with either a) the machine or b) the firmware update so they can quickly do a patch / recall / announcement to avoid the potential of fixing many many other devices out there.

HI
Now I'm confused!
I just took my 8pre and connected it to my other mac and HEY PRESTO it works fine. This is with 1.47 drivers not 1.48 as MOTU suggested. This is on my Intel Mac, not my PPC Mac which I had it connected to before.
At least it's working now.

That is bizarre ... I suppose you don't want to try experimenting further with it to see what combo's work and don't work, especially now you have it functioning properly. I tried mine on a PPC and an Intel and always had the "UP" showing on the LED's. I also tried it not plugged into a computer (as it can function like that too)... but always got the same result. It was like it was stuck in upgrade mode.

Hopefully your 8pre will continue to function well with the Intel.

Hi whitehouse
I've now tested it on both machines and it seems to work fine, both as an interface and in standalone mode. i know this doesn't help you. The only thing I can think of is that it was completely unplugged from all sources for a few hours, but I don't know why this would make any difference.
