Gah, turned out the mic is in Munich and they weren't very helpful at the store so I'm thinking of taking my business elsewere. Unfortunatly. Seems those mics are hard to come by. They would get back to me though so who knows...

I like the U47 Tube, never liked the FET model. Since you're doing the UA pre as well, have you ever tried a Blue KIWI? That combination seriously rocks----warmth and tone from the UA, with roundness and clarity from the Kiwi makes just an incredible combination. If you can get your hands, eerrr , ears on one---try it!

All I know is that we seem to pay much more for everything than we ought to down here.
If you take a typical music tech product and convert the US price to Aussie dollars, it usually doesn't even come close to what we have to cough up for it down under.

Oh I know... but I mention it because it's usually a pleasant surprise, and that micpre is a perfect match-up for it. IF you can, try it.... I think you'd be surprised.

Hmm, besides liking the U47 Fet, one of the reasons for getting it is for the fact that people know of that mic so it might get business in the door. The average small band have probably never heard about Blue... And also I'm not really a fan of how the Blues look Yes, I find that important too! :p

You could always get an U87, But i'd try and get an older one if you could but it does have that certain 'ring' with customers and it's been used on countless records as well.

I know but I think they're ugly!
But we're looking into getting one of those anyway hehe
But they're a bit cheaper too so that would be a good idea...

To a point, saying you have a U47 might attract more clients---then again it might not. Remember, it's the U47 tube that gets the attention, NOT the FET model. The U47 is a benchmark, but it's also an expense you have to think twice about. I have SO many conversations where a client will call me wanting to buy X microphone..... but as I preach often it's not the mic or the pre, but the combination of it. And when you get to a certain point, almost any mic will work...almost! We had MERCY ME in the studio recently and they commented (several times!) on how the Bottle (Blue) was the best thing they've ever heard. Weird looking? Oh yeah, but so was the original. The look of a mic doesn't have a single impact on the outcome of quality. And just having model X in the studio doesn't mean you're going to gain more or higher paying clients. ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS HOW GOOD THEY SOUND....and in some cases, for the cheapest amount.

IMHO, owning a U47 is like having an original 57 Chevy. Sure, you might drive it from time to time---but it will take constant up-keep and care and even then, it's not the best performance today. BUT it is a classic and you own it. With mics, it's the same thing----there are some amazing choices today that are incredible for less money, sometimes more. BUT if you want the original, there's no replacing the original.

This is where I always chime in about the Red Type B. What's shocking to me though is I just went to their website to find the link and can't find the Type B any more. Amazing. I will never let go of mine now.

This concerns me. If you ever wanted to get your hands one one of these, I'd write the company and inquire as to whether the Type B is being retired. If so, snap up on of the ones at the eBay link pronto. Oddly, there's another eBay seller offering a NEW Type B for about $1200, when they're $700 normally with the R7 capsule!
