I did manage to make Duende work with a motu Traveler on the same bus but it's a little wobbly. I now use a separate Express Card on the Macbook Pro, which gives me 2 extra FW800 ports for the external hard drives and the Traveler. Duende is plugged into the FW400 of the MB pro with nothing in the FW800 port. It still does wierd things from time to time but overall it works well.

I'd check out the Voxengo Crunchessor. For $50 you get a great compressor that does not hog alot of CPU. While you are there, take a look at VariSatrurator. Its not a compressor, but it is very cool. It is too bad Voxengo hasn't ported a larger number of their plugs to OSX. *sigh*

From what I have experienced, there are no real quality compressors out there for free. At least nothing that is going to approach UAD quality. PSP, Waves, etc. have great options but they are not cheap.

Outboard gear is a great option, but even more expensive.

Sorry not to be more help, but in my experience there is no quality free option.
