Your welcome flashgerkin...

Let me know what tricks you find in using both. I agree with you... it's all about latency and buffer issues. When I get more then 20 tracks going and then want to add some VI which is usually towards the end of the project... forget it. Crank it down to 128 in DP and let the party crashing begin. So my workaround was do a stereo mix, turn off all the other tracks and try to get the VIs working without problems. Strange thing is even that did not work when I would take the tracks completley out. The only thing I would do was export the two track to a brand new project, then quit DP... reopen the stereo mix and DP would then behave at 128... ahh what you say you want to hear a bit more melody to play your part with... ohh let me go make another work mix. Why don't you go make some coffee...

Now with Logic it just works. NO LATENCY...

However I still consider DP my goto DAW... Steve Jobs made a nice style pack to go with DP. So any DP guys that are feeling threatened by LOGIC... Forget about it. Logic has to catch up with DP. I can do a project without L8. I would not want to do it with out DP...

DP WINS...

You disabled the voices for the tracks, right? Not just turned off play enable? I'm assuming you did but just want to be sure.

Yeah completley disabled the play and the track circle... weird huh. It should not take up any CPU at that point. All the plugs dissapear but for some reason crank down the buffers and the party crashers show up.

Hey James like my gloss on L8? It's such a nice style pack addition to DP. We should send Stevie Jobs a thank you card signed by all the Unicorn tribe...

I'll be sure to post what I discover.
I just noticed in one of the demo songs that the markers are "colored" gray. When the "Global Tracks" pane is closed, the gray marker panels slide up into the time scale with all of the time lines appearing against the gray. That's a little better. (Light blue isn't bad either)

I definitely agree with your closing statements. L8 as an enhancement to DP is a good way of framing it.

Hopefully all of this will nudge MOTU to do what's needed to close the "performance" gap.

I am trying to use DP and Logic 8 with no luck so far.

when I save an OMF file from Dp and try to open it in Logic everything is playing out of time!! 8)

Any ideas?

I'm not there yet. Getting ready to trial the transfer process this evening.

I'm passing along this link that someone else pointed to in another discussion. I think the main points are discussed here.

I will post my results in the next few days.

Just a "file transfer" update of sorts.

SMF:
I saved Mach Five2 voices to a 13 track MIDI piece as a "Performance".
Saved the MIDI tune as an SMF. Opened it in Logic, inserted M5, loaded the 'Performance" , then went mousing around assigning those tracks to Instrument 1 (M5). No big surprise that it worked. Did the reverse also: Logic SMF to DP with M5.

OMF:
I exported the Logic 8 demo song Plaid-Faster as both an SMF, and an OMF.
The OMF loaded up in DP. It seemed to line up correctly. (I had the L8 window open to see the time line). Long phrases on a track became one long soundbite. The short reversed vocal phrases appeared to remain...short. I saved this as a DP file" DPA"

Then opened the SMF, saved it as a DP file: "DPM". Added the needed stereo and mono audio files; "Loaded" the soundbites from "DPA". From the chunks window, copied mono files into DPM sequence, then stereo tracks.

There was some MIDI track alignment issue which I'll look at when my brain recovers.

I hope others post results and suggestions.
One thing has become abundantly clear: Everything I said about the ease of recording MIDI and audio into Logic with my 3 voice guitar is true. Very smooth.

But, I want to edit, and mix in DP.
So this file transfer process has got to work.

I have no idea why you had stuff out of time going to Logic. I use the enforce Logic setting and it just works...

No OMF going back to DP... I am just loading in files at 0 start point.

DP fixes the OMF and latency and we will have a super DAW... Digitally Logically Performing... oh DLP is already in use...

Can you guys try using AAF instead of OMF? A Logic programmer last week told me that AAF exports volume and pan automation, whereas using OMF does not. So I'd be trying AAF....

I exported a session from DP as OMF thusly;

Enforce Logic compatibility
Export reference to sound files
Export fades as precomputed regions
Export 24 bit audio directly
Export clip based volume
Export original time stamps

It worked fine

well finally it worked.

What i was doing is that after I import the OMF into Logic I set the tempo value to the original song value which was 83bpm.

If i don't change it but just live the default 120bpm it works fine.

Move it to 83......a mess!!!

Exporting OMF from Logic to Dp works fine even if i change the bpm to 83.

are you guys doing the same thing?

waxman,
It was getting late. I need to take a fresh look to figure that out my self. It had something to do with text being detected before the "start" of the piece and I ended up usings DP's Shift function. So that's a long winded way of saying "pilot error". More to follow.

pcm,
AAF is on the list after transferring from DP to Logic. It may take me a couple of days to get there.

sdfalk,
I just copied & pasted that into my 'file transfer notes' file. Thanks.

Yiannis,
Thanks for the tempo value tip.

So let's keep this up.
Cheers.

Exporting a L8 song with MIDI and audio.
Save MIDI as SMF
1. Select all.
2. The Logic manual list several steps to complete before the export to SMF. Among them is: Region>Merge>Regions per Tracks. This is really important if there are, say 4 MIDI regions (MIDI data blocks in DP terms) i.e. bass 1, bass 2, etc. on that bass track. All regions will end up on the same track in DP. This is good. Very good! If you don't do this, then each region ends up on a separate track. So if the song has 16 MIDI tracks, each with say, 4 or more regions, then you end up with a bunch of extra tracks. No good. Believe me!
3. If this message appears: "There are some events before position 1.1.1.1. Move all selected, or put all Upbeats to position 1.1.1.1.? ( Two button appear: Upbeat, and Move All). The best choice to have all MIDI tracks end up in DP in their original position is "Upbeats". (The problem I had last night was I picked Move All since that was the default recommendation).
4. Open the SMF in DP.
5. Assign MIDI tracks to VI.

OMF
No problems here. Open the OMF file in DP, name it, save it.
Then "Load" the soundbites from that file into the DP MIDI file.
Create matching mono and stereo tracks, then copy and paste audio from the Chunks window.
Pretty amazing.

Regarding the tempo value, opening the SMF already establishes the correct tempo.

This concludes experimentation for this evening.
