hey, thanks for inputs,
I am likely to do this, once I decide on
what kind of external hard drive I get.
The one I have is ultra-flaky, long story.
I might get a hard drive disguised as a ne
laptop, and off-load all the non-audio junk
to the laptop.
I did read the big cats article in EM, and started
that process some time ago with mixed results.
In my continued trouble shooting of all this,
I have gone back to that music-only account,
and seem to see differences. Under the watchful eye
of MOTU, I have been installing / de-installing
DP, moving plug-in folders around and re-updating the
mac OS. I am having a great time.
Currently, I can sometimes get DP 5.12 to launch
in OS10.4.10. There seems to be a random number
generator controlling the launch/no-launch situation.
The only way it will work is with my ./Lib folder empty
of plug-ins. For example, I will launch, exit, move plugs
to Lib, have a failed launch, move the plugs back out,
and be unable to launch. Yum. This of course only
works after I do a combo-update to 10.4.10. (mine is a PPC
machine, not intel). The updtae seems to clean some stuff up.
I am going to start over. just need to get back-up situation
firmed up.

FWIW I think my PPC machine is stuck at 10.4.8.stylemonster wrote:This of course only

I have had decent luck getting a firewire case here:
http://www.dealsonic.com/exen.html
And then what ever seagate or WD drive I can find on sale locally.

resolved?
thought I'd finish up this thread ...
lessons learned :
DP5.12 seemed to insist on a 'clean' install.
After all my wrangling, the thing that seemed
to get me running again was to do a 5.12
install on a wiped-clean plug file, etc. Needed
to officially uninstall all other instances of DP. So,
apparently its a real good idea to keep those
updater web-install programs around so you can
un-install later ... hmmm ...
So I got dp5.12<-->os10.4.10 running,
(4-5 days ago), and turned it off quickly, so I could
start sleeping again. Will warm up this thread again
if it gets buggy ...
thanks for everyone's help,
Bruce

Yay! Well done, Bruce.
Fingers crossed it all runs smoothly from now on.
Please do follow up if there are any problems; I'm still literally scared to move from 10.4.8 and DP 5.11.

I think you're on the right track. What you did mirrored my own experience, which says that DP will work if everything associated with it can also be guaranteed to work. That means being very clean about plugins and VI's. Not only their installations, but their saved presets. Often, edited VI presets can cause problems in DP files that share the same VI's and the same presets, if those edited versions are not actually reloaded and resaved in the other DP files.
We have to be a lot more careful now that we are mixing and involving so many apps and plugins in the same dynamic space.
