Seemed logical to go the DP area, Jimbo; beefs about DP, requests for features, existing feature discussions, future directions for DP and the like are all likely to crop up here and there in this thread.
Call me old fashioned, but I reckon it wouldn't have done any harm in the DP area.

I did, and I came up with the proposition that DP's already past her 5<->5.5 series keeper version, that being 5.11, which arrived last November if I remember correctly.
Sure, MOTU could keep banging away at the few niggles that remain, but I'm not bowled over by 5.12 and so find it difficult to get excited about .13.

Now, a convolution 'verb, warm compressor, amp/cab sim, updated instruments and presets... those are things I can get excited about, as they'd at least save me a bucket full of cash.
Also, being indigenous plugs, you'd expect they wouldn't contribute to any bugs already present.

if a 5.5 is released i think i'll sit that one out until maybe ver 6. Things are working alright on this end and actually I am spending a lot of time with a live band doing improv, free flowing electronica, so Abelton live seems to my preferred tool for the job. I wish dp would learn a thing or two from krauts on how to work in the live domain........

I seems that the issue has become as much *when* we'd want to update as it is about the features. Does it really matter what version number is assigned to the update or upgrade?

Features appear to be in three categories:

1. those that are for simple convenience (more OSX-like behavior, certain windows zooming, other cosmetic GUI features inspired by other DAWs, etc.)

2. those that fix more pressing issues that are supposed to work now but don't always (multiple MIDI groups, consoles, audio bursts, audio engine effiency in general, etc.)

3. those features that are either behind the times, missing altogether, or are clearly eventual if not inevitible (64-bit threading, HD fps, etc.)

One general area that I'm discovering which may be at the heart of MANY problems concerns installation glitches seen or unseen. This could be strictly an OSX issue or it could be a flaw in the way the DP installer speaks to the OS. I have had 6 install discs from MOTU that have not worked properly-- my DP5 install disc failed to connect with Core Audio, allowing only for SD2 bouncing (no AIFF, no AIFC, no WAV, etc.). My audio and MIDI interface drivers on discs were delivered and replaced with install other discs that all failed before they did their jobs. MachFive updates downloaded from the motu support pages would not update properly, leaving outdated components and bundles untouched.

In all cases, various quantities of manual uninstalling and reinstalling had to be done. It makes me wonder if many of the problems I've had with DP are not related to faulty installation processes... it has happened way too many times to ignore. My last of 7 reinstalls over the past month finally worked having manually guessed my way through installer logs, cross checking this with numerous previous install folder snap shots, and manually moving/replacing important missing or older files in the libraries and other places. This whole process took several weeks to figure out-- and I'm not 100% sure I was able to catch everything. Seems okay for the moment, though.

It all starts with the installation, doesn't it? If that feature alone is poorly implemented then it all falls down after that.

Yep, quality control in the manufacturing process is what it takes. I suspect it is an outsourcing problem. I had similar problems with Symphonic Choirs. Eventually I got an entire set of disks from East West that actually installed properly, but only two of the disks were part of the original set I received.

I'm reviving this thread in the interest of expedience.

Two questions:
1) Will MOTU only show/hint at/preview DP X.x next month, in which case we'd have to wait 'till January for NAMM?

2) Will MOTU skip the .5 update, as has been done in the 3.x series, and bring on the whole enchilada as good business sense would suggest given the current climate?

I speculate that the beans that were going to spilled slowly for us may require a major dumping in our laps.

I think we'll first see Leopard and then a DP 5.5 update pretty soon after it. At least I hope so.

According to macrumours and macscoop, Apple has gotten the "release candidate" -version of Leopard ready, so it's comin it's comin..

Well perhaps, I know better than to cast doubt on the Oracle of the Monkey. So, I will yield and agree on a possible 5.5 deployment, but, here's the curveball. What if MOTU did something like this:
