I just went to PT 7.3 and it was a classic example of a Digi update.
They added some functionality in the video dept. Cool.
Then they broke the transport play command buffering. Dumb.
They rearranged track size management. Whatever.
Then they broke the custom track arming configuration. Dumb.
Then they added yet another pop up window on the import command. As if it wasn't cumbersome enough.
And of course the old bugs that have been there since ver. 5 are still there.
With Digi it's 2 steps forward 1 step back every time.

Your memory may be better than mine on that subject, but i seem to remember there wasn't a version that ran on the then CURRENT version of PTs for quite a period. So yes I could have used it if I chose not to upgrade everything else because of M5.
And i'm not completely happy that it took digidesign 5 or more years to do anything about a decent sampler - I mean it's really their fault I had to choose MachFive.
But even if I'm completely wrong about the text issue, it still doesn't change the fact that MachFive has been a sorry story.

not to mention in MOTUs defense. even though we have been waiting for machfive II notheing has stopped me from being EXTREMELY productive using machfive I. as a matter of fact i still use M5I 1.2 so that i can do the old trilogy, atmosphere trick.

Agreed. Hope you didn't go to Unity in between.
The Structure demo at Musik Messe looked swell but I didn't see anything I thought couldn't be be done with other tools that weren't as "proprietary" or likely to obsolesce.
I don't know how many years it has been between Soft SampleCell and Structure. Thankfully, I bailed on Digi long ago.

Digi's website confuses and scares me. I feel stupid when I log on and try to get updates.

Sounds interesting... and off topic (sorry) - but what's the Trilogy/Atmosphere trick?
I'm a big fan of Trilogy and have it lurking on an old Mac ... don't tell me M5 can read the samples? That'd be, er, useful!

yep!
it was a certain version of M5 (1.2) and a certain version of the OS 10.3.xxx.
10.4.xxx still works but you can't see any text. i just write down what is in the M5 slot on a piece of paper. it's better than nothing.
they killed the trick with anything after 1.2 as they didn't want us reading other UVI libs. it's too bad really because i actually do own all of the Spectrosonics stuff and love using it in M5

... and just to make it more interesting, I'm on PC, where the latest version of Mach5 is allegedly 1.2. I s'pose I'd better hurry and check it out, what with version 2 definitely arriving soon. *splutter*

Not to pull this thread back to topic or anything

!!!
I did the public beta on Structure and I thought it was crap. It has that A.I.R. plastic sound that makes crazy. Not to mention that M5 is a much more robust sampler. If it works half as well as the website claims, M5 will combine about three pieces of software I use down to one.
1. Sampler. More layers. More control. More filter options. Better mixer. All around better.
2. Loop processor. No more Recycle, export, then import into my rex player or whatever. It goes right into my M5 library. Yay!
3. Rex Player. No more Reason! Yay. Running an external piece of software just to have a REX player drives me batty. Structure has "REX support" but all it does is spread the slices on the keyboard. It doesn't actually play the rex file and let you export MIDI files from them. Of course you could use Stylus for this but you are locked into their propriatary file format : LAME! Not to mention finally having non Apple support for Apple Loops and real Mac support for Acidized loops are going to be a real boon to my productivity.
Oh, and Kontact is fine and all, but it's ugly. It's difficult to even see what you are doing. I'm sorry but a slick GUI is important to me.

jimlongo wrote:MachFive is probably great if you use DP, but if you're using PTs then Structure is a much better product. It runs much better within PTs - drag'n'drop is fantastic in the beta. The interface is much easier to SEE.
Hmm, are you assuming that MachFive applies to just DP? It seems to me that MachFive and K2 have the advantage of going cross-platform (Windows and Mac), cross DAW (Sonar to Logic to DP to etc.) and from entry level apps to top level pro DAW's (GarageBand to Logic Pro).
