Thats why the M3, or the M100 series are so good. They have more or less the same guts as the B/C3- tonewheels, scanner vibrato,2nd 3rd harmonic percusiion and all valve circuitry. You can pick up an M for a little bit more than the NI B4 software in the UK. I was offered an M3 for $100 in Northern Indiana when I was visiting my inlaws.
The M's are pretty famous though most don't know it. The M3 was used on Green Onions, The M100 on Whiter Shade of Pale.Pink Floyd used an M102 up to Dark Side of the Moon.

So good, I was in a band with a guy that had one, he also had a Hamond Watch Works "A", it was made befor they could legaly call them organs.

If I recall correctly, the biggest difference between the Hammond 3 series and the spinets is the lack of foldback in the upper registers. (With the higher drawbars pulled out on a B-3 and as you progress up the keyboard, when you reach the end of the mechanical oscillators' frequency capabilities, they simply foldback and repeat in the next octave...one of the reasons the B-3 sounds so "full")

If you are brave, you can add full foldback to the spinets. The M's are ready but for a few bussbar contacts, which are available. There is a 'Poor Man's Foldback' option which I think can be found on Captain Folbacks site. Basically the highest drawbar can be made to fully foldback. This imo is the one that matters as it adds that lovely whistle that makes you shiver when on chorale on a leslie.

I did alot of research and decided to go ahead and splurge.
If i were a guitarist, this would be my vintage tube amp and tele.
If i were a bassist, this is my 62 Fender Pbass.
If I were a singer, this is my....my......my..........surgically installed autotune.

For myself, the most imprtant part of the "Hammond" sound is the Leslie. Call me crazy but I really don't like the sound of a Hammond through a regular amp. Never liked Jon Lord's Marshall amps.

I'm hoping to get my 145 all fixed up and run the Logic EVB3 through it. I'll be able to A/B it to a CV/122RV. It may be a few months until I get the time. My thoughts are that it will sound as good but be a lot more flexible in the sounds.

A real Hammond through a real Leslie is truly a living creature.

So many ways to mic them too.....Stereo pair on top (XY, spaced, or facing each other on opposite sides of the horn/cab) with a single on the bass roter. If the room is cool, a single mic or stereo pair can sound great a few feet or more away.

well, right now ... my room is my garage....but i'd rather have a hammond/leslie in a garage then a b3 VI in a huge hall.

Well, I used to cart a B3 and a leslie around and keep it in my living-room. While I agree nothing beats a B3 for sound and feel aesthetics, I am so glad for NI B4. It does "come close" to the sound, and is somewhat easier to maintain. And much easier to carry and store. Now if someone would make a drawbar controller organ like an old cx3 that had 2 sets of drawbars and an authentic feeling and working volume pedal, without making you pay for another lesser sound modeler inside it: I would swell with joy. enjoy yourselves, ye purists, I am moving on.

there are somethings that just never beat the original.

even the "NEW B3's" arent the same. Not the same feel, touch, etc.

Although once the instrument is in the mix, the difference is less of a factor if at all. The insturment is hardly as important as the way it is played. That will always be true.

It seems that there has been a resurgance in the populatrity of Hammonds. I think it is more bragging rights than actual tonal factors.

Why do so many believe the instrument is more important than the playing, the music, the feel. I would rather hear someon one who can really groove, really throw down on a "Virtual" Hammond than some hack MF on the real thing.

Seems that is just how things are nowadays.

I never see anyone post anything, nothing, jack ••••, about playing, about how to stay in t he pocket. About how to use the organ to compliment a rhythm section. How to stay out of the way of the bass and guitar but add someting to the groove.

for the player, there is nothing like the FEEL and SOUND of the vintage hammond.
If there is one thing true, they can get pretty damn close to the sound by using the VI's....but have you ever tried to put Billy Preston on a VI and tellhim, "oh, yeah, we'll just automate your drawbar settings in the next pass..."

Regarding the dirth of posts about playing in the pocket: What in the world could you write about that, short of "Um, it's good to play in the pocket"? It would be the equivalent of, as the cliche goes, dancing about architecture.

Anyway, I applaud your "radical" decision as a keyboardist to purchase, god forbid, a real keyboard.

All that aside, I bet Hendrix could've played a mean ukulele. I can't attest to his ukulele V.I. skills though.

You know, I spent several years trying to get that great Leslie sound for my guitar and purchased several rotary pedals, Hughes & Kettner, Fulltone, Voodoo Labs and even Dunlop. (yuck!!) I never came close to the sound I was hearing in my head. Then I finally bit the bullet and shelled out the dough for the Boogie Revolver which has a 12" speaker seated vertically and spins inside an outer cabinet. Holy Cow!! I finally found the sound I was looking for. There truly is no substitute for the sound being physically swirled around. (doppler effect, right?)
