The M3000 can be had quite a bit cheaper tho, so I suppose that's a consideration too.

That's why I never trust reviews. I just did some work at a studio that had both a PCM91 and the M3000. I found myself just loving the M3000 - the reverbs were "lighter". They seemed to get out of the way in a hurry without fully disappearing.

I trust my ears...and my ears really liked the M3000.

And for what it's worth, the MX400XL is $550, the M3000 is $1500. I'm not sure these units are competing in the same ballpark. I could be wrong, but I expect the MX400 is not going to trump their PCM91.

My next step is going to try to find a Reverb 4000 unit to test out. It's about $500 more than the PCM91, but might be worth the extra $$$. But, once again, my ears will be the final judge.

I guess I was thinking you could probably pick one up second-hand. I found at least one here in Oz for around $500. (That's about $11 when you take the exchange rate into account!).

I think you are right to trust your ears - and if the feature set suits, it should be a done deal.
