Yes, If MOTU can't get the Intel machines working smoothly I see your point but I would go back to a non-intel with a lease for a while befor you jump ship on DP.
I would go back to a non intel if I hadn't just sold my g4 and g5 imac to upgrade to this $3000 computer. I am kinda stuck with the mac pro for a while.
I will do some more testing and see what I come up with.
SO I tried removing all my FW gear and just running dp with internal soundcard with no fw HD. ran great for about 5 minutes then CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!
so it must be something software related.
I think that dp's UB update is faulty for intel computers. everyone I've talked to around vancouver running dp 5.1 on a non intel is having no problems.
If Logic crashes then you have a case with Apple, that is if you have the extra warrantee.
Worst case scenario you could sell it now on ebay while the price is still way up there and jump back into a dual 2.7 non-intel which you can likely buy cheap with little hit and just wait like many of us are doing.
I decided to wait for a proven version of DP that really works and after hearing your story, I'm glad i did.
I can't believe MOTU would let this go on too long if it's an issue though. What do they say when you call them? What are you doing when it crashes?
Are there any reports on Intel such as there were with the 'iSight Audio.plugin' on PPC? That used to bring my system to its knees several times a day until I trashed it.
I would recommend taking another look at some of the older PITAs that generated crashes just to double check.
Also, I would remove all non-MOTU plugins and reinstall them one at a time-- checking performance extensively with each reinstall.
The thing about changing applications is that you are stuck with the same hardware-- if changing hardware is not an option.
Before doing anything too drastic, consider wiping the drive and reinstalling everything (backing up first), and then using combo updates for OSX instead of the individual update patches. I'd even recommend bypassing OSX's automatic software update feature and just download the software from Apple's site.
If you want to find the needle in the haystack, sometimes ya gotta just burn the haystack.
I love it.
Mention RAM, whisper the word or even think about it, and the hobbit miraculously appears, as if on-cue.
5 macs and $3000-4000 worth of modules (sticks) are my contribution to the Gods of RAM.
Unpredictable yet inevitable freezes were the order of the day (no side-salad, BTW).
Back in the ol' OS9 days, this meant forced rebooting, of course.

Good advice, Frods.
It's hard to argue with that hobbit-logic.
Come to think of it, it's probably difficult to argue with a hobbit (and win).

If you only knew what evils have befallen my little DAW Shire over the years!!

Funny-- anything I say at this point could be viewed as constructive disagreement, even if it were to mention that I've lost more arguments than I've ever won!

Better to lose an argument sweetly than to win one at the cost of your dignity!

You know her too? Small world.
Although I know her intimately, she's never mentioned you, Frods.
How ironic.
