Your right if I unplug inputs it stops.
I use mine to route an external reverb for tacking,my first thought was the reverb fried so I switched it out for another but it kept on happening.
But what I don't understand is my hardware setup has been the same for yrs this just started happening a few months ago.
Something else that started around the same time is when I open an existing DP project all my outputs have changed to ADAT.
Also Audio output in the OS changes to internal speaker.
When I Googled this it looks OS related.

Has anyone been able to resolve this I'm beginning to think my 2408 is just shot.

Hi - I have exactly the same problem with my 2408 MK3, and I can only tell you a few anecdotal things:
1) when this occurs - I switch the port that I have the 2408 in on the 424 card, reboot, and that usually fixes it (for awhile anyway)
2) I use Digital Performer and I have noticed that if the 2408mk3 is not showing up as the ACTUAL 2408 Mk3 in the inputs/outputs section of DP (i.e. it just says something like Analog 1 or 424 Analog 1) that means it will DEFINITELY crackle and pop on playback.
So sorry I don't have any solutions that are more methodical than that - but this issue drives me CRAZY and I have only found these anecdotal things seem to fix it for awhile and then for some reason the software "forgets" the settings or loses the registration of the device for some reason and I'm back to pops and crackles. I never had the problem with the device before DP5 - but DP 5 and up seem to have the problem.
Hope this is helpful - I feel your pain!

Sorry - I should note - that moving the port for the device tends to "reset" the registration in DP and it sees it as a 2408Mk3 again in the list - so the particular port might not be as important as simply "refreshing" the device somehow - which moving ports and rebooting seems to do.
Also should add I have clocked this thing to all sorts of different devices and moved the 424 into different slots etc. The only thing that seems to work is a basic overall refresh of the devices so that they are back to "default" config or something and registering clearly as 2408 Mk3 in your DAW.
Have no idea if this will work for you. and its only fixed the problem temporarily in my setup - and it always seems to find its way back into the situation and require a fresh start at some point - sometimes days - sometimes weeks, but it does seem to come back.
Good luck!
