Just to add to this discussion , it's not an OS9/OSX thing that's the problem, it's hardware related issues with the 324 cards. They use an older implementation of DMA which is where the problem lies. On some PCI chipsets it's ok, on other's it's not so happy. I'm not sure there's a definitive list of which are good and bad anywhere. It also does depend (sometimes, depending on the chipset you have) what other PCI cards you are running with this older styled DMA access (some other cards can stomp on/hog the PCI access and bandwidth).
And lastly I think MOTU still let's you trade up your old 324 to a 424 for a bit more money (not positive of this). I use a 424 card on a dual G5 with no problems at all (even along with UAD-1).
Should I buy a 2408mkII/PCI-324 for DP/Surround or am I

Make sure your computer with the R-BUS card, Roland VM3100Pro and monitor speakers are all plugged into the same electrical outlet (with the same power strip or conditioner) or at least on the same wall circuit. The "big ugly hum" might be a ground loop electical problem in the room if the various equipment in this setup is plugged into different circuits around the room.Originally posted by emulatorloo:
HOWEVER IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE -- muddy and big ugly hum. . .but enough to keep me going as I pursue the other options.
Thanks again.

I do all my work in surround, and one of the things I really would like to have is one of those little sticks-o-joy.
There is the new Yamaha DM1000, and there is also the Tascam 2400.
Very different beasts of course, the Tascam is purely a controller, but if you are working in surround, trust me, doing all the mixing in the box will drive you insane, so it might be worth thinking about a bit more of change than you had originally considered.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

Got that covered -- I am pretty sure it is just the eMagic audiowerks8, and it probably seemed really bad to me intially due the fact that I am suddenly out of the all digital world and back to analog outs out of a computer card.Originally posted by Brian W. Ralston:

Anyway, I upgraded my cables some, still noisy, but good enough, and as it is only for monitoring I think I will be fine until I get the Roland routing sorted out or a better (MOTU) solution falls in my lap.
THNKS!
