Keep in mind, asuza, that you've got some VSL and EWQLSO people here as well. That's one of the reasons why I've been excited about layering sounds. Even the best orchestral libraries can benefit by supplimental layering.

In addition to VSL PE and VSL-VI, I have Miroslav, GPO, plus a lot of the Roland XV orchestra cards. The all come in quite handy when used with taste...

so what is the trick with the Quantum Leap Brass? I bought the Akai version and have had no luck loading it into Mach5.

Is the Roland version stuff the way to go for importing into Mach5?

It's not really clear what M5 will do well and when it chooses to do it well or not do it well. Some people have had great success importing different libraries from different companies. Others have not. One user had no problem loading this particular Roland string collection into M5, so at least there is hope there.

But I'm not sure there really is any one *definitive* way to go-- at least not until M5 v2 shows up and proves itself to be user friendlier with format conversion and import than M5 v1 seems to be at times.

Something you *may* want to consider is CDXTRACT 4. It is available for OSX, and it converts from/to various sample formats. You can spotlight individual samples or batch convert them. The caveat is that it's $139. I've had my eye on it for a while to take care of tasks that M5 v1 might not. But as I said before, I'm waiting for M5 v2 which should do these conversions as advertised.

If M5 will convert Roland format more easily, then the idea is to convert the Akai set to Roland, then import to M5. Just a thought.

One of our Australian brothers (mjwever) just posted a question about the Akai Ultimate Piano collection on EW sounds online-- $19.95. Check out the demo. It may not be the best for classical music, but for close-mic'd studio jazz and pop it kind of blew me away.

I'm going to spend an hour or so going through that entire site for as many of these little $20 gems I can find, and then I may just have to pick up M5 v1.x tomorrow (and pray that it works okay on my system).

I'm fairly certain that UVIXtract is an OEM version of CDXtract.

Frodo, I suspect that UVIXtract and CDXtract are the same product. CDXtract looks just like UVIXtract that ships with MachFive.

Chicken Systems Translator is another good product. If you have a PC (or Virtual PC or Bootcamp), the Windows version translates just about anything.

You know-- until this year, I wouldn't have taken a second look at PC utilities-- but it's becoming clear that it may be time to start collecting data on such things for the sake of the Intel revolution if Bootcamp is likely to be the key that opens the door to a whole new world of software previously unavailable to Mac users.

Well, mine arrived yesterday. Conversion to Mach5 went okay. There were a few presets that just had a few samples at the highest velocities and maybe that's really how the library is.

I have to say I'm not overly impressed, but you can't beat the price. Many of the samples sound like B-52 bombers to me and I'm not sure if I like the "detuned" euro sets... There are not a lot of articulations but the basics are there.

Time will tell as I have yet to actually place them into a mix. Many of the samples might sound nice layered with other things. I'll probably keep a few presets on the hard drive, like the Pizz, which are pretty nice.

I am new to Mach 5, and just received my first sample CD that I'd like to import it. The disk is, of course, the East West Ultimate Strings Collection, in Roland format, that I purchased for $19.95.

However, when I insert the CD into either of my iMac CDROM drives, I am told that the CD contains no volumes that can be read by OSX, and the CD doesn't mount.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't have M5 yet, but I just put the disk in and clicked "ignore". I'm wondering if you did that and started M5 if M5 would "see" it.

Or start M5 first, then put the disc in?

Frodo is correct - click ignore.

You have to launch Mach5 and go to the UVIExtract icon...once UVI is loaded you can convert all or part of the disk..
