I'm on the fence with this one. Not because of the new features or anything lacking, I'm quite excited simply by the new edit modes as well as soundbite automation and folder tracks. Streamers and visual click is good for me too. The instruments are good candy, but as a Logic user, I'm kinda tired with proprietary plugs I can't use elsewhere.

BUT, I just composed a very short piece using DP4.6, and a horrible time acclimating to the 'DP way' of working with MIDI. I longed for the object oriented programing from Logic. I got it done, but not very happily. I've had the app for quite sometime, but have really only used if for audio multitrack editing.

If the surround file format issues are addressed, that would probably convince me to cough up the dough, even if it's to keep using DP as a mixing/audio editing platform and compose in Logic. Though I'm getting a little sick of Apple right now too, not just logic but the whole 'Pro' line of software. I'd like to consolidate, to max of 2 platforms, Live 5 and Traditional DAW. I've got Logic and DP, have no desire really to go ProTools, unless I go HD, which I ain't got the capital right now. I once used Cubasis back when I was deciding between Logic and Cubase. Should've looked at DP harder back then. I'm moving to more live multitrack recording and audio manipulation, even from synths. Maybe I've answered my own dilemma. But man, working with MIDI was NOT enjoyable at all.

Whatever. My own problems I guess.

not to p*ss on the parade but I do agree with the fella Bradswan. There doesn't seem to be any indication of Motu tightening up the audio system and fixing and tweaking bugs. That is a deciding factor of whether I part with the upgrade fee.

Track folders do look very useful - good feature, as do the new tools for audio, but I dont need the synths - they are but candy. I just downloaded that Automat synth for FREE! It sounds as good as a commercial VI to my ears. The filters are very smooth

I'm still very perplexed as to what use that petition to optimize was that 150 of us 'signed' with our comments...I can imagine the guys at motu with huge tufts of cotton wool in their ears at the moment, communicating with semaphor flags.

Mind you I should put my foot in my mouth and wait to hear what those of you say when you get your copy

Can't wait to get my hands on it looks very good hope it's as stable as 4.6.1,Cause it never quits on me and that dp5 looks so good they need those new features cause i was getting tired of seeing the same thing but the new dp5 makes me want to get to work Ya No.dp forever

They said it is more efficient and should ship in the few weeks.

the meter bridge alone is worth the upgrade price to me. i can't wait.

hey budd... I have used logic for a few months exclusively some time ago and have found MIDI very similar to DP... The audio was nowhere as slick... but MIDI was very close... unless you have some specific querky requirnments you should have no problem using DP for MIDI... PM if you need any help...

it works exactly like that according to the motu site...

herer's a bit of a hassle to watch out for when/if you're ordering your upgrdade via the web....

The web upgrade requires that you enter your *serial* number....*NOT* your keycode(s) that comes stamped inside of your manual or with your disks. There's info about where to find your serial number (doing "About Digital Performer" on your Mac won't do it).
But their info goes on to state that if you've been receiving upgrades for some time, you wouldn't have been receiving new serial numbers and would need to use your "original" serial number for doing the upgrade.

Well, I went back thru my disks/manuals archive all the way back to DP 2.5 and could find *no* "serial" number(s)...just keycodes. Finally had to phone them and they found my serial number as a verison 2.1 (!). They were helpful, took my order and said "hopefully" shipping by the end of next week.

Looks like a great upgrade to me.

For the record, I would NEVER want DP to work like Logic, MIDI or audio-wise. I've never found Logic's object-oriented MIDI to be anything but confusing. And Logic's mixing board still sucks big-time.

as a Pro Tools user this is one of my biggest wishes.

although I'm a little confused about the "Roll" tool. couldn't this just be the default or modifier key behaviour of the Trim tool. there's a lot of tools up there. is this Logic?

trim tool, input monitoring, track disable. 3 of my biggest problems with DP solved. I'll be upgrading now, thank you.

I klinda want these Instruments but Bouncing back and fourth might be too much hassle to do it practicaslly

I wish someone would make their program able to MIDI slave . or allow the plugins in the other

But the upgrade looks nice Meter bridge is my next favorite

I don't think this is the case. They use Reason as an example, but Reason doesn't run within DP rather it comes into DP on an aux track (or now an audio track) using Rewire. The point was you don't have to set up an aux track just to monitor live inputs when not recording - like hardware synths while working in MIDI or for checking levels of an instrument you are about to record. There is no mention of actually being able to record on Instrument tracks, though that might be a nice feature. However, any VI out you used to have to assign to aux tracks can now be assigned to audio tracks and recorded whenever needed. At least that's my understanding.

Have any of you that have called and spoken with MOTU verified any information on bug fixes?

Hanging MIDI notes? Drum Editor?

Seriously???? they said that it's more efficient???? That's the biggest news of all if it's true. (I'm not saying there's potential for you lying, but rather potential for a motu guy giving you misinformation)

The only reason I can figure they wouldn't put that on the website is that it would be admitting there was an efficiency problem before... but hey, software companies admit to bugs and such all the time, so why should it be a big deal?

I would have liked to see a list of bugs that were addressed, if any were. That's a big issue for me as well. The fact that DP doesn't do 23.98fps is also a big mistake. A lot of the film and TV world has started using 23.98 because of HD. I've already had two recent films and a current TV series that is using 23.98.
Meter bridge is cool, but I use TDM, so I imagine the VI are going to be useless for me. The streamer stuff is excellent as well as the tracks folders.
