Adam,
Have you contacted MOTU about this? You can try tech support and/or emailing the suggestion box
suggestions@motu.com . This problem is frustrating, but remember, this board is not administrated by MOTU. They do check it, but it's probably best if they hear directly from users.
No fixes... esp merging...

First of all, I would not want to "fix" this problem by merging as I need access to the extra files underneath, etc.... at least until I'm finishing up the project and am sure I don't need to move something around.
Second of all, it only happens on some projects and not others. This I haven't been able to figure out yet. I certainly don't want to have to flush my undo folder - there's a reason it's there!!
it's very annoying..... at least it's happening only on some, not all....

I know this is a way old thread, but had anyone figured out a solution to this problem? I've gotten it for the first time and can't figure a workaround other than merging the files which I don't want to do. CRAP. what a pain. I'd love to know if anyone has figured this out.

I haven't found a solution, and haven't had this problem in DP5. Then again, I haven't been working with files as heavily edited as when I posted about this last spring.
However, I was just thinking that for those who are reluctant to merge soundbites: you could save a copy of the project before doing the merges, just in case you need the un-merged version later.
Or you could duplicate the tracks, merge the duplicates, and in-activate the original tracks until/in case you need them. If DP re-calcuates fades on the inactivated tracks, this wouldn't help.

You don't even need to do that. You can just duplicate the take. Also by selecting all the tracks and holding down 'T' it will duplicate all of them at once. Then you can merge and flick back to the original anytime you want.

But it can help to not have too many (unused) soundbites in a project.
I'll usually dup takes and merge. Then if all is cool with the merged files, Save A Copy, Delete Unused Takes, Remove Unused Soundbites.

I had this problem a couple of years ago, and I don't remember the solution! But it was something I was doing, something I could fix...it may have been the permissions on the fades folder for the project, I'd suggest checking that and making sure you can write to that folder...meanwhile I will try to remember...
interesting...

I'll have to do some experiments and see if I can cause the problem by locking out the folder or something....
