My concern is less with what systems it'll run on (I assume it'll be anything above a PPC running Leopard) and more with the potential for general bugginess, if DP 4 and 6 (the transition to OS X and the transition to UB only/pre-gen/CD burning/etc., respectively) are any indicator. This is probably a lot bigger of a transition than those were. That's not to say DP 8
will be buggy -- obviously, I hope it's gonna be great! -- but I have a feeling my next upgrade will be to 9 ... much like I'm patiently toughing it out with Snow Leopard until Snow Lion (or whatever they call it) comes out, or until I get my Sweded-out dream iMac and I can no longer deny the future.

I just heard from Magic Dave. He confirmed that anyone upgrading to DP 7 now will get 8 at no additional charge when it ships.

I'm optimistic and think (and/or hope) that MOTU learnt from the DP6 debacle and will ship a DP8 on par with the DP7 release. And for windows, if they want that to go well, they just can't afford to release a buggy version.
MOTU were really struggling with DP through the OSX and Intel transitions and weren't really back on track til DP7. Now DP8 comes after a version that has been really good and stable. I think we're in for a treat with DP8!

I thing you're bang on the money with that! This is very likely going to be a smooth upgrade, and I believe MOTU has probably been working hard to make sure that there are going to be a minimum of issues. I have no worries about this. I'm just tingling with excitement.

Well, seeing that besides the 64bit, this seems like kind of an incremental update. I've always been under the impression that 64bit recoding justified a integer update, and that's what they've done, and little else. That's cool with me. And it means that there's not a whole lot to screw up. Let's face it, with DP6 they bit off more then they could chew.
Though, GOD I wish they'd friggin revamp the drum editor!

With the new rewrite of DP,Motu has recompiled the code from cocoa to a carbon program, now offering 64 bit operation,Windows compatibility,15 new plugs& the new punch feature.
It amazes me that anyone can consider this a minor upgrade, in my view this is one of the the biggest upgrades I have seen in many years from Motu.
DP8 64bit has the potential to offer us tools and power we couldn't have imagined just a few years ago.

I will be upgrading on Day 1. DP7 is great, but I was disappointed that it did not transform into a 64bit app during its version cycle. The other features that will be announced are going to be icing on the 64bit cake.

Day 1 as well. I would love to see a future DP version with the IRCAM time stretching/pitch shifting algorithm. I go to iZotope RX2 Advanced (for time) or Melodyne when DP can't handle complex stuff (like piano). That said, this release is HUGE me thinks!

Wow. I got one right.
I look forward to confirming your optimistic projection about DP8 and 32bit booting machines. …MOTU being MOTU I'd be shocked if they announce the answer to this rather obscure and specific question, so I suspect we won't have a hard answer until DP8 is running on our computers.

IRCAM time stretching in MachFive 3 is excellent...I would love to see this in DP8 as well.
That being said, I would love to have ARA in DP8.

I was trying to be careful in stating that, while I'm being overly cautious about DP8, I'm certainly not saying it'll be in any way buggy -- I would hope that it'll be as stable as possible and that all the new implementations will work to our (admittedly high) expectations. As buggy as DP6 was for some people, it was at least still usable, and I don't think any of its faults were enough to dissuade anyone from upgrading to 7, where everything was resolved. For me, I'm still on Snow Leopard and a 32-bit machine, so the rewards for upgrading would be minimal, while the penalties for upgrading to a potentially unstable version could be high, which is why I'd sit this one out and just wait for 9, unless I upgraded my machine and my OS and felt that I had to go that route. That shouldn't apply to everyone. This is going to be a landmark upgrade.

I've always considered MachFive to be the "other half" of DP. It rather completes it as a DAW, IMO. So, maybe we can use MachFive's IRCAM features to enhance DP. I've installed MachFive3, but I haven't even begun to explore it, other than one evening of testing to make sure it was there and all working. I'm looking forward to seeing it play a larger role in my work in DP.

This is a big upgrade. The rewrite from Carbon to Cocoa has been an ongoing thing now for many years. You could tell as they went through DP and rewrote different modules of the code, because things functioned differently, we lost interconnected "backdoor" shortcuts, and things just didn't fit right or feel right. These little buglets (not real bugs, just different design) traveled throughout the program over the years with each release bringing something else we had to get used to, in addition to whatever intentional features were added. I don't know how much they did at a time, but it was evident that it was happening. Then DP6 came along, and we found ourselves with a completely Cocoa-based GUI. I thought THAT was going to be the Cocoa rewrite, but it wasn't. Anyway, it's continued until now, I guess, and DP8 marks the first time that MOTU has been willing to go on record saying it's 100% done.
With that rewrite behind us, we could be looking at a new age of improvement for DP. A 100% Cocoa app, when well written, means that changes can be implemented very quickly without breaking other parts of the code. Cocoa apps, if I recall correctly, can easily be compiled for Windows, too, which means that MOTU can release new versions of DP for Mac and Windows simultaneously. It means that modules of code can be used in other apps, too, so we may see other DAWs emerge -- maybe an amateur DAW to serve as a lead in like Garageband does for Logic. Maybe MOTU will now work on a new score-engraving app like Mosaic—something to fit in the huge gap between the amateur scoring apps and the Finale/Sibelius types. Most of us don't need absolute control over every facet of every line, as Sibelius offers, but would be happy to be able to score symphonic music with ease. I still miss Mosaic for that sort of thing.
Anyway, now that the biggest project in DP's history is done, our requests may get some programming time. This could be a very productive era for all of us.

Hi - I appreciate you bringing the Notation Window issue up front. We’ve been using this window (not to be confused with Quickscribe) from day one (we don’t do Lego-blocking in the MIDI window). The Notation Window is extremely essential to us and to many of our colleague composers and musicians. This window has been screwed up for the last 3 updates and MOTU is ignoring our requests to fix it. Maybe this will be heard.
