A few thousand years ago Noah refused to let 'em into the ark, or something. The Unicorns days were numbered then. :-(

Cool Monkeyman. You've helped to spark some more ideas...

How about www.iMOTU.com?

or what about www.Unikornation.com (just to show we're not stagnating)?

Good going mate!

OK, I've got the clincher here, seeing as Logic hasn't reversed anyone's polarity so far:

Girls love Unicorns.

Watch the UnicorNation percentage skyrocket...

Mac 2012 12C Cheese Grater, OSX 10.13.6
MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O
Novation, Yamaha & Roland Synths, Guitar & Bass, Kemper Rack

Pretend I've placed your favourite quote here

I think we should also be courting the eunuch vote.

Stay away from manuals that have logic on the cover, they will upset the monkeys delicate poo throwing nature.

How insightful, Mark; thank you for the sound advice.

It is after all a delicate balance of confusion, contrition and self assertion that perpetuates the Monkey's flingin' existence.

1. It's just plain silly. Unless you're a 10 year old girl.
2. VERY dated, that's why MOTU is embarrassed by it and is trying to distance themselves from it. It's hard to take anything seriously with the word unicorn in it. There's a shop in Tucson called Rainbow Guitars. I bet they wish they had chosen a different name now.
3. If MOTU drops it then it means nothing. It will just confuse people, and probably already does. I bet most people (who aren't hardcore MOTU fans) wouldn't know what MOTU stands for. ESPN doesn't mean "entertainment and sports programming network" anymore, because they say it doesn't.
4. unicornation is a really awkward name, doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
5. My wife likes to tease me, saying "are you reading about unicorns again?" or "are you looking at your unicorn club page?".

It seems like some people are very enamored of the cliquish aspect of DP and Unicornation. In that case, I'm sure the unicorn thing helps keep people away.

That's obviously just my opinion, but I also thing Digital Performer is not a great name. I'm sure it made sense at the time, but now no one even knows what Performer is, so the distinction of "Digital" Performer doesn't meant anything to most people. Someone younger does not look at it as the audio version of Performer (which also made sense a long time ago since it played MIDI performances). They think of it just as a product with a weird name, like Mark of the Unicorn. Who the hell is Mark? Of course it's digital, what else would it be? And performer? How about "Byte Dancer" or something completely 80's?

You end up just saying "DP" because the name is so awkward, but if people don't know what it is they just look at you weird.

All the bad naming just helps make MOTU look like a small market company stuck in the past. MOTU is a fine word by itself, even if it doesn't mean anything.

Please, everyone, re-read the above post. It is profoundly true, every last word.

The unnecessarily awkward, dorky nomenclature around this program needs a fresh coat of paint. I know we can't change the name "Digital Perfomer" (boy, I wish we could) but let's at least start with a cooler name for this website.

If there's anything you can learn about the story of Apple's marketing victory, it's that cool is important.

p.s. ...Although it's also worth noting that DP isn'tthe only software with a terrible name that everyone's gotten used to.

If you had to rename DP, what would it be?? (just for fun)

If you think about it, ALL the DAW's names kind of suck.

PT?? Herramientas Profesionales???
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Agreed!! Get rid of the Unicorn, please. I'm as nostalgic as the next guy, but I got rid of my ponytail and stopped wearing tube socks a long time ago

Hmmm... tube socks? I got no problem with them since I'm wearing jeans and lace-up ankle-boots most of the time (for motorcycle riding in our glorious So Cal weather-- besides, it's cheaper than driving my car).

MOTU = island

Post by Nigel Keay »

MOTU is a fine word by itself, even if it doesn't mean anything.

Just for the record, "motu" does exist in at least one language in the world - Maori, indigenous language of New Zealand, and it means "island".

Please skip that reference... we all know it... no need to say it. Thanks.

As for "Digital Performer" itself... well those of us with the historical perspective know it's simply digital [audio] Performer. Now that MIDI only sequencers are pretty much non-existent it is redundant and "Performer" almost seems like it would be better... but who am I to say?
