After spending a week fiddling with Logic 8.....

All I have to say is... I am saddend by my departure from DP

While DP has been my frind for over 12 years, This program has made me walk.

All my favored plugins work. Not to mention do the stock logic modulation plugs sound better than MOTU's offerings.

Logic is a million times easier to use now. Dragging /importing tracks from a PT session is now even breezier. No longer do I have to create the tracks or wait till DP does file conversion.

FINALLY Logics audio engine no longer sounds like plastic. I have mixed 5 songs thus far and am impressed.

While I will continue to purchase/upgrade DP and hope they will best Logic one day, the inefficiencies of the program have come to roost with Logic 8's arrival.

One simple little test I do.

Even with MOTU's Pre-Rendering, which was/is awesome, I am able to outdo DP with my simple, non-scientific plug in limit test.

By upwards of 50%. without going into node mode. With node mode, using a similar speed mac, I am able to increase my plug in count by 75% over the single computer limit. And thats just one node.

HONESTLY!!!

I am Pissed. MOTU has no excuse for not fixing all of the problems we moaned and groaned about. The Poor VI support (efficiency) That made me buy Logic 7 and start preproduction over there. DP was still my Mix Platform of choice. But this is ridiculous. Apple is murdering MOTU.....


DP 5.12 is a slow antiquated dog. They better come up with something good and Quick.

I Love MOTU. I am very Loyal, but dog gone it, Logic 8 just snuffs them out.

So I am PISSED!!!!!!

I just received an album to mix. I had a choice. DP or L8. I am mixing it in L8. and I am happy.

I have been very quiet on the board lately. I read and stay abreast, but man this is dumb. MOTU needs to invest in some R&D for the software and lay off the hardware for a while. I feel screwed....

In the meantime, I will mix to my hearts content in Logic 8.

I still love my MOTU family.

Now I know the true meaning of the words.... Parting is such Sweet Sorrow.....

Wonderful... do you think maybe we need to make one thread where everyone can come here to announce their farewells? Maybe we could put them all in once place?

Thing is, Commander James, irrespective of what DAW someone might use, this is really the best audio community around. So people will be lurking about forever, cuz they can't leave UNation behind. Kinda poignant, right?

Maybe there could be a support sub forum for DP users who bought L8, and everyone who posts and reads that has to pay ten cents everytime, and it could support all of U'nation, as I'm sure it would be busy with bug reports, etc... - just think, no more google ads

James, as vocal as I am. No you dont need a place for Farewell posts.

Over the past 7 days this has been building up inside of me and I released it. It's frustrating. You spend hours/days/months/years prosletyzing DP on the masses to be let down becuase they wont fix simple speed issues......

I am one of those reluctant convertors. I embrace and love change. in 1999 with a simple 350Mhz G5, I said farewell to mixing on an SSL to sell out to ITB. ME and DP made beautiful mixes together. 8 years later DP 5.12 still feels less efficient than DP 3.11.

SO I gripe. My Prayer is MOTU take sthis as a MAJOR wake up call and gets their act together......

Like wheever said. This is the BEST COMMUNITY... It is so great of a community, wehn you were down for 6 months, I bought the domain unicornation2, set up a pilot board and was ready to roll it out if you hadnt come back.

I Believe in the software, hardware and the people who use it.

It's like a kid having his favortie toy replaced by his parents. Not good. There will be tantrums. LOL. AND I am throwing one. LOL.

Yeah grown man bent out of shape over some software. LOL. Forgive me.

I make my feelings on this issue very public, in hopes that one of the MOTU people will read this forum and take action....

For an alternate viewpoint, Let me tell you what I miss, or hate in Logic 8.....


1 - The Tracks window. YES I LOVE THE TRACKS window. I hate being stuck in Logic arrange window. On the other hand, my wife loves the Arrange window. She says it is a lot easier to work in it than the sequence window. She makes music, I mix music. 2 different people.

2 - Audio Editing. YOu would think that in 3 years they would have fixed that. But nooooo... still with the dumb scissors tool.

3 - I miss the audio drawer. Why do I need to pull up a menu and open a dialogue box (project setup) to adjust sample rate, bit depth, clock source and hardware/studio settings..... Logic should not have borrowed that from pro Tools

4 - I miss the ease with which I can set a loop in DP. Logics version is cumbersome to me. Intuitive, but cumbersome.

5 - Whereis the Temp Tap button!!!!!!

6 - Where is the pre-roll/post-roll ease of visual and setting that we have in the selection drawer.

Now, what made me like logic is 1- efficieny for mixing and 2 - they bit off of motu and came up with a consolidate window, 3 - 15 Inserts

One thing will bring me back in the fold like a lost sheep found by his shephard. MAKE DP MORE EFFICIENT!!!!!!

7 - Where is the ease of use of beat detection. Come one people this technology is OLD now.

SO Logic is far from perfect. These are 7 things off the top of my head. But I dont run a studio any more and mixing is what matters to me. For now.

Lets hope this junk gets fixed.

Thanks for allowing a fellow motu'er vent. I am, and hopefully will always be a MOTU junkie. LOL.

all things fluctuate in a pendulum like manner. Sometimes the momentum is up and other times down. Often the down time/clam preludes something bigger.
Motu's 20+ years in this industry will not vaporize in leu of L8.....

That pendulum you referred to, that'd be like the weather, stockmarkets, heart rates, moods, decay rates, magnetic flux readings of the earth, birth rates, death and disease rates, lifespans, odds of success in any given situation, fertility rates, live music tempos, singers' and instrumentallists' pitching, evenness of steps whilst walking, sizes of mouthfulls of food eaten, and indeed the meals themselves, energy levels of the body, depth of breaths taken by any individual, temperature fluctuations of the body, hormonal levels in the body, the temperature of a motor engine and the strength of the wind's pendulums, no?

I sure wish that folks would realise that nothing is constant.
Far too many of our false assumptions are based on the naive belief that things are as they always were, and as they'll always be, IMHO.

Speed AND consistency. There is no excuse for having broken features in DP. From 1986 to 2002 everything in Performer/DP just worked. If anything was broken, it got fixed in an upgrade cycle, 2 at the max. It was the most reliable piece of software I've used in my life, and I include all the Adobe, Apple, Macromedia and Microsoft offerings in that comparison. There is no excuse for the broken features and strange goings-on with audio bursts, MIDI bursts, and various corruption issues. Those should have been job #1. Tap Tempo! What happened to it? That's a big one. And then, of course, the speed. But I'm happy enough with the speed now that I have an Intel Mac. It's fast enough for me. Logic is no faster for what I do. What bothers me is the inconsistency.

If Logic is consistent and always works as advertised, then yes, I'd be very tempted to TRY to make it work for me. But DP is where my heart is. Logic will be here next Thursday; I ordered it already. At that point I'll start finding out where I stand with all this. But I can tell you this, I want DP to work. I want MOTU to fix those things we've been telling them about since 2003 when it was released.

Giles, thanks for the heatfelt expression of the changes you're going through. Let's hope that MOTU is listening and hears that all we want is for DP to work efficently and consistently. We don't need bells and whistles. If we had the kind of stability and speed we used to feel in the classic days, Digital Performer would have bragging rights over just about any DAW out there. Apple's price cuts couldn't hurt it. But it's very hard to make a case for a runner when people keep pointing to his broken legs. DP still works for me. I still get a lot done when I do work in it. But I also spend days troubleshooting things that shouldn't be there. DAYS. That adds up to months. Eventually it will take a year or so out of my work. I can't afford that!

We're just asking for MOTU to fix what's broken. And I don't think most of what is broken ever gets through their tech support people to the people upstairs. When Tech Support says "that's not a problem," and basically ends the call with no resolution, you can be sure they don't go to the programmers and say "we've been getting a lot of calls on this." Are they even getting the message?

I hope so. I really hope so. I want DP back to its grand state of consistency and speed.

Do you know if there was an ownership, management, or personnel change (specifically software engineers?) at the time? I also wonder about how tech support is managed and if the bugs we report actually make it to the software engineers?

It would seem that something in the "people chain" is broken or missing. Somewhere, someone is not devioting the time, effort (and perhaps re$souces) to keep DP humming and keep releases like MachFive timely.

Yet they had time to develop their multi-$k video interface... hmmm.
