"But rebuilding anything right out of the box points to additional oddities with installation glitches. It could be an Apple issue as well. MOTU could be following Apple's developer specs to the letter, but Apple is far from perfect and often is ignored as the source of the problem.

But the very least MOTU can do is to make this workaround known to its users sooner rather than later until such time they manage to release a maintenance update.

I've spent more time in 2006 tweezing out solutions and less time using DP to make music. I realize it takes MOTU time to test issues and attest solutions. But it also takes users the same time to do the same thing while paying for the privilege of theta testing software intended for more creative purposes.

Something's gotta give sooner or later."

Amen!

DP5.11 was still crashing after the update, repaired permissions, etc. but after deletng and reinstalling latest MIDI drivers (1.32 I think) things have gone more smoothly even where I wasn't "using" MIDI. More testing later.

5.11 working great for me. i haven't crashed since i installed about 48 hours ago. feels like working in a solid piece of software again.

it's unfortunate it took 3 months, but since there were also some changes from apple in the past 3 months (like the firmware update 2 weeks ago?) it's unfortunately one of the risks of being an early adopter. and, unfortunately, a new version of software (dp 5.1) on new hardware (intel mac) with a new os (10.4.x universal) leaves room for lots of problems.

if music were my day job, and my mac and dp were essential to my livelihood, i probably wouldn't have jumped to the intel mac, yet.

anyhow. looks like most of us are out of the water. and we're back to the days were "reinstalling" and trashing prefs etc. can make a difference.

i still haven't loaded any "old projects" to see how they come in, but i've read elsewhere on this board there've been some happy results.

hopefully our posts on this thread were helpful to motu. i know it was helpful to me to see that others were getting the same crash error. it saved me from really going nuts and doing stupid stuff thinking it was my error. or a hardware error and more $.

best wishes to all who posted and followed this thread.

MacBook Pro DP 5.1 crashes

Post by straysean »

I have a MacBook Pro intel core duo 2Ghz with 1 Ghz of memory, and have had similar crashes to all these i'm reading about here. I'm using a LaCie D2 250Ghz firewire 400, at first because it was impossible to run it off the internal drive without it coming up with processor overload, with minimal cpu usage. DP has problems trying to save to the firewire drive. Often freezing up completely. I've just updated to 5.11 and had no improvement. I'm wondering what Motu think of all this as it seems there's a lot to sort out. Any ideas?

Straysean strange behavior indeed.
What about recording, and saving on an internal partion ?

I have always used partitioned internal HD since DP3.11.
Very efficient in DP5.11 here.

My external HDs are kept for backup purpose only.

I use TechToolPro monthly to get all these tuned and never a glitch around that.
(fingers crossed...)
