Thought I'd add to the list again.
First - it's obvious, at least on my G4 Powerbook, that DP has been optimized.
I've already posted that basic things like app startup and project loads are faster. Even better, projects that used to be trouble on the CPU are playing back perfectly and allowing way more CPU headroom. Last night I loaded a test file with BFD, a couple softsynths and added MSI. Then I turned on the MSI convolution reverb (not the "fast" reverb) and could play along with BFD and the other synths (no tracks were frozen). In earlier versions of DP, I sometimes couldn't use the MSI convolution reverb at all, even when the only thing in the project was one MSI track.
I think it was chrispick that originally mentioned problems with Plugsound stuff. I have Plugsound Free, and if I try to load an existing project containing it, DP goes kaboom. I haven't tried adding Plugsound Free to a freshly made project.
I'm now able to lower the latency without glitches, so playing MIDI along with existing tracks should be much more pleasureable.
Note: I have only used DP 5.1 with my Line6 Toneport UX2. I don't have my Firewire 410 interface installed yet, since updating to Tiger from Panther.
I know that the "YMMV" issue comes into play here, but so far, I can heartily recommend the 5.1 upgrade to PPC users. Maybe the performance gains are more noticeable on the lower end systems, I wonder?
DP 5.1 and plugs

Just to clarify, I've upgraded to 5.1 on both a G5 iMac, and a G5 dp 1.8, and all my non UB plugs and VI's (Native Instruments and IK Multimedia stuff)
show up fine. On my MacBook though, when I run 5.1 it doesn't see anything non UB. I can run 5.01 on my MacBook and all is well.

I was saying that it was SLOW on Intel - sorry if there was any confusion.

Reinstalled OS up to 10.4.7 (Intel),
installed 5.1 and now it‘s running like a rocket.
No problems and CPU Power like hell.
Don‘t know, if i still should try this setup with that last security update,
which is ment to be a little disturbing some things in OS X.
Wonder how 5.01 could run well on a Mac Book. That‘s a bit odd, isn‘t it.

So far DP 5.1 running much better here (G5 Dual Quad). The Auto-punch crash bug in 5.01 is now fixed. In general the stability improvement in DP 5.1 seems like night and day compared to 5.01.
Initially I had some problems loading existing projects with DP 5.1, It would crash every time. I decided to clean out all the previous DP 4.6.1 and 5.01 prefs and MAS plugins, reinstall 5.0, update to 5.1 and now all is working well. The only plugins in my MAS folder are those installed by DP 5.
I believe that MOTU made some major changes to the MAS code. If you are having problems I would recommend removing all 3rd party MAS plugins that are not updated for DP 5.1. Some plugins install both an AU & MAS version, DP will default to the MAS if it is available. Remember if you are using an MAS plugin in a project and re-open the project (after removing the MAS version) it will not automatically substitute the AU version, it will view the plugin as missing, thus all your plugin settings will be lost. I would advise saving any important MAS plugin settings before upgrading to DP 5.1.

WSVP.
Is the 5.1 upgrade monitoring the Quads' dual core usage properly now?
5.01s' Audio performance monitor was never accurate once the Quad came out. It always differed with the Acivity Monitor and MenuMeters readings.

Hi John
I am not sure if this is an inconsistency or not but when I checked Activity monitor my CPU usage was about 70% for DP, but the DP performance meter was around 20%. This was while playing back a project. Not sure if anything can be construed by this, my feeling is that this might be like comparing apples to oranges (LOL).
Punch-in crashes

Still crashing on punch-in recording. I trashed my preferences, etc. and upgraded to 5.1. All was well for a time -- thirty or so uneventful punch-ins -- then the problem came back. Crash! Alas, back to 4.6!

Do you have any non-DP5.1 plugins in your MAS folder? Unless they are updated for DP 5.1, you might want to try removing them and use the AU version instead.

I only have Performer plug-ins in my MAS folder -- no third party. Is that what you mean? My AU's are Kontakt 2, GPO, Absynth, and Ambience.

Pat-- make sure that all of your non-MOTU
MAS plugins (if any are an issue now or later) have been updated. Some older versions of MAS plugins will crash 5.1, AudioEase plugins are a prime example of a non-MOTU MAS plugin. Such plugins also run in AU and other formats. It's the MAS versions that have been the question.
The native MOTU MAS plugins are all UB compatible, according to MOTU's notes. Further, as an example, MOTU says to updated M5 running under MAS to the latest version for 5.1 compatibility.
This is a separate issue from AU versions, but those should be updated as well-- or at least you should check their respective websites for any notes on what AU versions are UB compatible.

HC-- well said.
I'm still trying to sort out any advantages to making the update now. I don't have an Intel and DP is still 5.01. I'm just happy that things are working fairly well at the moment.
Maybe a little PDF light reading will help pass the time for this latest update.
It's funny how MOTU doesn;t mention improvements in stability or speed etc..which is what we're all clamoring for...

dougieb wrote:5.1 is SLOW - just ran a few tests against other hosts - basically the same file - in Live and Logic - and they both screamed on it - DP... whamp whamp whamp...
It looks good - but OMG... I have to wonder what is going on under the hood. Completely lame!
Why does Logic just scream no matter how many plugs you throw at it? (within reason)
Even the demo file that came with dp runs at about 40% CPU usage. - and its only like 4 virtual tracks!
Dissapointed!
OK..I am a bit confused...
If I am running on a PPC, 2.5 dula, will DP 5.1 work without me updating all my plugs, especially Waves Platinum, to UB?
Can I run my saem plugs or not?..
Thanks

If your running a PPC Mac, and have DP 5.1, any plugins (PPC only or UB)
should work fine.

When asking where to save, this appears:

And then crashes.
I'm having the same problem here. I have Logic Express 7.2 and Digital Performer 5.1 installed. No 3rd party plugs and I can't even create a new session... that sux... any ideas?
