Best clock settings for dual 2408Mk3 and Apogee AD16
Hello, im waiting for alot of stuff now, PCI424 to arrive at MOTU factory due to digital clicks issue and my Apogee AD16 to arrive home.
My Question is, will i get better results using my dual 2408mk3 slave to Apogee AD16 or will it be the same as using MOTU 2408mk3 as master?
in future i will use other devices with Adat A/DC such Focusrite Octopre and Presonus Digimax...
What will be the best setup in your oppinion to avoid clock problems and loss of quality for setup:
#1 setup:
-2 X 2408mk3
-1 X apogee ad16
#2 setup:
-2 X 2408mk3
-1 X apogee ad16
-1 X focusrite octopre W/ADAT option
-1 X Presonus Digimax 96K on ADAT cable
(32ch ADAT total + 16 motu analog inputs)
Thanks!

Will i really need it? i can get 2XWordClock out from the dual 2408mk3... altough i can also slave my 2408mk3 to ADAT Input from apogee ad16, ive done it before with great results, my question about the diferences is in quality from one to another setup. Will i get better quality with an external clock Generator?
Yes,you can slave your 2408MK3 to AD16 for your "set 1"PedroCruz wrote:Will i really need it? i can get 2XWordClock out from the dual 2408mk3... altough i can also slave my 2408mk3 to ADAT Input from apogee ad16, ive done it before with great results, my question about the diferences is in quality from one to another setup. but in "set 2" I think you will need a generator to lock your device..
actually,I have 3x2408(MK1,MK2MK3),3x Digimax LT,1x RME 9652 for softsynth PC,so I use Lucid GENx6-96 to lock my device...
_______2408MK1--------------adat----------------------- |
PCI-424 2408MK2--------adat------------------|_______|
_______ 2408MK3 (WC) to Lucid to 3xDigimaxLT, 1xRME9652
___________|
___________|
_________MK3 SPDIF to Central Station to 1030A,NS-10
My Clock Source is"PCI-424:Internal" in DP 4.6.1
someone tell me I can use Lucid to be WC Matser,
then set Clock Source to "2408mk3 Word Clock in",
and I try it,But I don't know why,the sound is strange,weak...
maybe 2408MK3's Word clock module is not very well
good luck

What about this?
#2 Setup- PCI Clock internal, WC out to AD16 in, WC out2 to focusrite Octopre and ADAT out to Presonus Digimax (external sync to ADAT in)
Ive done this before although without the AD16, and it sounded very good, my question is, will i get better results with external clock or other configuration. this way it works but if i can get noticeable better results ill go for it, if the diferences are not noticeable ill not.

MOTU clock is bad. High Jitter.
Lucid as Master to all devices.
It definately helps, and the change in sound is noticable, but only slighty.
But enough to make a difference.
I have the Lucid GENx192 with 4 2408's. #1 set to WC in.
All the RME's in the slave systems are set for WC slaves.
All outboard converters get their own clock in as well.

Multiple word clocks- question and anaswer
I spoke with Dan Lavry about this a while back. He knows what he's talking about as he makes some of the best converters in the world (IMHO)
He said in my case :Focusrite ISA 430MKII (2), ISA 428 (2), Liquid Channel (2), PCI424 with MOTU 2408 MkIII, 24i/o, 1296: get the shortest cables you can, put a 75 ohm T connector on each WC in. Now start with the 1st Fucusrtie and go out to next T/Tout to next/ until you get to the last T in and on thatput a 75 ohm terminator. He said this is BY FAR the best way to word clock - beats Big Ben and other multiple clock devices. I have used it for several years @96/24 and it's been great sonically.
Now a general question:
If PCI 424 links to 4 motu interfaces (2408MKIII for example) can you take the WC out of each 2408 and run to individual units WC in? Like 4 ISA 428's.
thanks

Multi wordclocks
Hi Rockid,
yes I would use internal setting DP. It then sends automatically WC out of each unit (thanks (PedroCruz).
Pedro, what would happen if I used the Focusrtie WC as master to the PCI 424? If I came in unit 1, and set DP to WC in, would all the MOTU interfaces see WC without having to hook them together?
Thanks,
jackthebruce

jackthebruce- Yes
All devices connected to PCI424 are running on same clock, whatever you select. so all your cards are sync. so you'll get clock in every digital output and sync output like WC.
There is no need to link WC outputs to WC inputs in the motu devices connected to PCI424, they are sync by audiowire already.
Basiclly when you choose eg. 2408mk3 WC input,in audiowire 1 to be slave to an external clock, PCI 424 will use that clock to all audiowire conected devices...

so, i have a 2408mk3 and i'm using it as the clock master (pci-424 internal setting) i have my presonus digimax set to external and they're both hooked up with a bnc. secondly i have a 1296 with an octopre. i'm thinking of getting the digital output (aes) installed on the octopre to use with the 1296. if i do would i just get another bnc cable and hook it up to the 1296? also, would i need to change any settings in dp for the 1296 to be the master of the octopre? or will the same settings i'm currently using with the 2408mk3 and digimax be correct for both units?
i'm still thinking of getting a lucid for all this but in the meantime...
