Hello learned folks,
Is it possible to have two operating systems installed on the same hard-drive (mac os 10.3.9 and mac os 10.4) without having created separate partitions assigned to each ?
How does software which functions in 10.3 behave if I tried to boot it up in a 10.4 environment which actually co-resides on the same hard-drive?
At this moment I work with a pretty smooth set of applications based around DP4.6.1/ PCI 424, Spectrasonics trio, Waves, Altiverb5, TC Powercore some Native-Intruments modules, none of which pertinently require OS 10.4 (Tiger) to function, so it all works pretty well in 10.3 (Panther).
The reason I'm wondering whether to install 10.4 is that I would really like to work with Kontakt2, which unfortunately for me, only functions in 10.4.
The scenario I'm trying to project in my mind is to find out if once I boot my system up in 10.4 (yet to be installed) I could just click upon an application such as DP4.61 already residing on this same hard-disk and combine it with the newer version of Kontakt2.1 - will all my other audio and VI plugins be able to join in within this new environment? In OS10.4?
How about the existing software authorisations, will they still be recognised? They are all already installed on this same drive, yet can only perhaps be seen through the opened window of 10.3. Does anyone know anything about this?
In a nutshell: will a "hosting application" such as DP4.61 boot up in 10.4 taking along all of its "satelites" such as VI's and audio plugins, if it is on the same hard-drive as the older, yet functional 10.3.9?
I'm still confused because I've never had two operating systems installed on the same hard-drive.
Can anyone here perhaps offer a suggestion or cast a verdict?
Thanks in advance, and cheers,
Alix
Two OS's on the same hard-drive? Without partitions?

Not possible as you would have 2 system folders on your hard drive and it would confuse the boot up process.
UNLESS. you archive the old system and use startup disk to boot from the archived system (No guarantees that this will work)

Sounds like a real bad idea, even if you could get it to work.
Personally I have a 10.4 drive and a 10.3 drive and that's worked well for me. Apps installed both places. Of course 10.3 drive only has the "problematic" apps that will only work in 10.3. 10.4 drive has everything that will work in 10.4.
Both are internal, but in a previous life my 10.4 drive was an external firewire drive.
