Problem Synching an 896 and a Traveler

Greetings All,
I am new to the group and hope you can help me out.

I am trying to combine an 896 and a Traveler to provide 16 channels of analog input to a PC based hard disk recording system.

The PC: Dell Optiplex GX260, Pentium P4, 2.26GHz, 512MB RAM
The OS: WinXP Pro SP2 with "rollbacl" patches KB885222 and KB904412.
The 896: S/N 126357, Firmware 1.02, Hardware v2
The Traveler: S/N: TRAV005930, Firmware 1.07, Hardware 1.0
recording Software: Adobe Audition 2.0

The devices are daisy chained via Firewire as follows: PC->896->Traveler

The MOTU Audio Setup sees both devices and provides tabs for them.
The General Tab window is as follows:
Sample Rate: 48000 (or 44100)
Clock Source: 896: Internal (or Traveler: Internal)
Multi Channel Wave Synchronization is Enabled
MOTU Audio Driver: 3.6.7.0

An in-phase multi channel analog signal (1kHz sine wave) is input to channels on both devices. Recordings made using these devices are out of phase. Channels within a device are in phase. The analog outputs of the 2 devices are also not in phase.

Front panel behavior of both devices when manipulating sample rates and clock sources (between 896:Internal and Traveler:Internal) seems proper. Master devices sync first (LEDs stop blinking), etc.

I can run 2 896 devices together with sample accurate phase locked synchronization. Either 896 paired with the Traveler produces the same out of phase result.

Can I achieve sample accurate synchronicity with a Traveler and an 896?
