Best burn speed for DVD backups?

Post by wdegillio »

I have a Quicksilver dual 800 mac, OS 10.4.5. My stock Superdrive can burn DVD's at a speed of 2X, maximum. I intend to pick up an external Firewire DVD burner (the LaCie with Lightscribe) soon. Will burning my DP data backups at 8X or 16X cause a greater disk read error problem? Or should I play it safe and burn them all at 1X as suggested by some?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

I rarely use the drive's fastest speed simply because of performance headroom. I most often run at 8x on my 24x drive until the data is ultra critical, then 1x does the trick. I have had a few instances of errors at 8x but not many, and I've never burned at rates higher than that.

When in doubt, 1x.

4X & 8X have always worked well for me. Remember to "always" verify.

The quality of the media will play a bigger roll than the burn speed.
