A thought on stuck MIDI notes in DP5

Post by chrispnyc »

I never had stuck notes until upgrading to 5.01. As soon as I did, I couldn't play a single MIDI note without it sticking.

So, I did the following and now I have no stuck notes at all:

1. My MIDI Express XT was plugged into one of the built in USB ports - I removed it and put it in a port on my USB 2 card (this also eliminated the problem of my computer not sleeping properly).

2. I deleted my Audio MIDI setup, DP prefs, and most importantly (I believe) I deleted the file HD>System>Library>Extensions>MIDI??.ktext (can't remember the exact one, but it was the only kernel extension with MIDI in the title).

3. Reinstalled Motu USB Driver 1.31 (not 1.32)

4. set up a completely fresh Audio MIDI setup (eliminated all others before installing 1.32).

5. Installed Quicktime 7.1 (just released a bit ago). I have had huge issues with Quicktime 7.0x. 7.04 was such an absurd joke that Apple still has the 7.04 to 7.01 downgrade installer up on their site. 7.01 caused me issues with CoreAudio in the past, but I think that this 7.1 might be the right step.

These are just my steps and it seems to have worked for me. Maybe try these options yourself...it could be just one of these or a bizarre combination based on what your setup is - I don't know.

anyway, just wanted to share.

Good luck - there is an answer to stuck notes, its just a huge pain to get there

Good going, Chris! Just in case anyone is just now coming in on this discussion without the benefit of having read some of the previous threads, MOTU no longer has a link to driver 1.3.1. So, I've made my old installer available to anyone who needs that driver.

MOTU USB MIDI Driver version 1.3.1.sit

The name of the driver is:
Motu MIDI Driver.kext

and you can find it here:
HD/System/Library/Extensions/MOTU...
If you just type MOTU once you're in the Extensions folder, you will get there quickly.

FYI, I think it was just yesterday that Apple made 7.1.1 available via Software Update.

Shooshie - thanks for posting that for people - you beat me to it!

Again, not everyone will have the same experience - I really think that it is a combination of things and is system dependent.

I do think that there are CoreMidi issues, and since Quicktime is part of the 'media' routing in the OS, it is worth considering it as a culprit.

I don't however believe that Motu is off the hook - the way that DP's MIDI interacts with the OS is in desparate need of a re-examination...just because the roads suck and have pot holes doesn't mean that car manufacturers can use sloppy suspensions - the same holds true for CoreMidi/DP.
