19" wide screen

Post by daniel.sneed »

Any one tried once using a wide 19" screen ?

I am thinking to take the plunge. I think it fits better my way of staring long times to DP sequence editor.

Any known issue ?

Thankx for advices

Me too.

I asked about them here a couple of weeks ago and no one replied.

Does anyone use a 19" widescreen ? I was told in one shop they can be problematic in some cases.... I couldn't pin the guy down to be any more specific about it though.... :?

strange afirmation

My old powerbook Titanium came with a wide screen.
That's the reason why I'd like to stick to this type of view.

If you can find any further information, it would be of much interest.

4:3 vs. 16:9

Post by papageno »

Just keep this in mind:

Screen with same diagonal (for example 19'') has more area when sides are equal. The biggest 19'' screen would be square. The more difference you get between longer and shorter side the less screen area you get.

This all comes down to basic geometry and math.

The bottom line:
----------------------------------------------
19'' widescreen (16:9 ratio for example) is actually smaller than
19'' normal screen (4:3 ratio)

thats true, but wouldnt you be able to see more tracks in the mixing board with the larger horizontal dimensions even though the total area is less? the mixing board is typically a rectangle not a square, right?

Of course it all comes down to what you need.
If your mostly need to see a mixing board which fits better on more narrow screen then widescreen is perfect for you.
I am working with scores and I need to see both, horizontal and vertical.

Just got a 20" Apple cin. display it spreads things out well. I run a 19" crt along side of it. This combo gives me alot of space to put every thing.

What is the current measuring criteria, and is it consistent? The reason I ask is that I was briefly in the computer monitor business in the early 80's, and I remember it being very precise and consistent as the diagonal of visible screen area.

Yet these days when I go into a store and see the specs, my own measurements don't even come close. Sometimes they match the full enclosure diagonal, which on an iMac G5 may be twice as big as the actual visible screen area. Sometimes it seems to match the width instead.

What gives? Are these numbers "real" anymore?
