No, no, he doesn't want more. He only wants us to be consistent. So, whatever you send, just keep sending it. Of course, if all of our 16,000 registered members sent a dollar a month, James could afford an amazing studio! ;) But as he has told us many times, he rarely gets more than about $12/month, with which he nearly breaks even. Some of us apparently aren't putting our money where our mouth is. I send a buck every time I think about it (or each month, which ever is later). And James won't accept your donation if it's more than a dollar. (I can attest to that.)

Actually, you CAN send more via PayPal. All you need to do is fill in the amount and hit send in your PayPay account. $5 is not too much to pay. Look at it this way.

Would you buy a shareware program tht worked as a self-help for MOTU products, that you could argue with if you don't like the answer, get multiple responses to your problems, AND share your experiences with?

Of course you would. Well, if you think of this site as "shareview" and use it as "freeview" why not think of it as "pay per view?" At a buck a year, if you access it 3 times a day, that comes out to (let me see... carry the naught...) something like 9 nano pennies per view.

OK, this girl in HS used to not charge at ALL for a peek, but that was recreational :) This is business!

Well, you're right on that, but Shooshie's also correct. I tried to send more than $1 and James refused to take it. (I don't remember exactly how much I tried to send, but it couldn't have been too much. Probably $5 to $20.)

Personally, I'd love to give James $20 a year, this site is worth several times that.

I'm a newbe and thanks for drawing it to my attention. I have got soooo much from the people on this site, including you guys so a $1 has just been sent from me and will continue to be done.

I think this facility is wonderful.

Steel PM'd me and said he was thinking about closing the donation part when I suggested his server was a bit slow recently.

Certainly willing to help out but I guess he will have to let us know what he wants/needs caus I can't figure him out.

It's not that hard to figure out. As with you or me, James would rather be known as a musician than a webmaster. Like us, he barely has the skills to run one of these places, and feels inadequate when things go wrong. Unlike us, he actually does it, and figures out what he needs to know. So, if he's going to be a professional webmaster, he feels funny accepting donations when he knows his skills aren't the same as someone who does this full-time. And if he's going to be known as a musician, then he'd feel very funny getting most of his income from this site. You see? Any of us would feel exactly the same way.

But since I understand this so well, and can handle it without any adverse psychological effects, just send your EXTRA donations to me, and I'll tell James how well his site is doing.

;)

Shooshie

[edit]PS: I forgot to add: when people pay you for something, you feel beholden to them to make it work all the time. Worse, they think you ARE beholden to them, and they start making demands when things go wrong. This is a donation site, not a pro site. James doesn't owe you anything for your donation, so don't hound him when things go wrong beyond his control, like what happened last week. THAT's probably more than anything the reason why he might close down the donation part of this site. Being a musican takes time more than anything else. You have to wear a lot of hats, and the work itself is tedious and long, even if it is fun and rewarding. Then there's practice. So, adding webmaster to the list of hats is an exercise in frustration. Just thank James for doing it as well as he has for nothing in return but satisfaction. Send the tiny amount that he asks for, and let it go at that.

that would be like trying to return something that broke to the dollar store a half year after you bought it, you just say, oh well, and go spend another buck.

Thanks Shooshie,

Well.. The info helps and adds more understanding, thanks.

BTW, I never complained, I just passed on some info, thats all. I congratulated him on a damn popular site and asked if he had added his own server and suggested MOTU help maybe. I was curious really because I'm thinking about trying it on my own site myself. I added a few too many suggestions I guess. I have certainlly dropped the issue on this end. He seems they type better off left alone or maybe he just doesn't like me. I don't really care at this point.

Cheers..

Hey, you know on these forums it's hard to tell when someone does or doesn't like someone else. If you're busy, and you write curt responses, some people will undoubtedly interpret that as indifference or even disapproval. I just take the attitude that on a semi-public forum like this, all registered users are equal. I tend to like everyone, including those who come here with a chip on their shoulder. Once you've been around the block a few times, you know that everyone has a soft spot somewhere, and it just takes time before they trust you enough to show that side of themselves to you. I only get miffed when someone either follows me around and posts annoying personal comments, especially anonymously as a sock puppet, or when someone posts stuff that's just really wrong, and does it consistently--mythmaking. The latter is usually easily corrected. The sock puppets are another story.

So, don't take things personally when someone reacts. It's usually not intended that way. You're as much a bigshot here as anyone else. At least, that's my philosophy, and it works for me. :D
