Need to Optimize Drive(s) for Audio Recording - Please Help!

Post by ArTeZenâ„¢ »

Hello, I badly need to optimize my system for audio recording. My machine is old and not the ideal tool for audio recording, but it's what I've got and I need to utilize every bit of of it (pardon the pun;) Please share whatever you know, even if it's only the answer to one question...

My System & Recording Software:
I am running OSX 10.3.9 (& OS 9.2.2) on a 450Mhz AGP Graphics Power Mac G4 with [2] Hard Drives: [1] 80 GB and [1] 120 GB.
My recording software is DP 4.6, Ableton Live 5.02 and Reason 2.5

What & Where To Install:
1) Should I use one of my hard drives for DAW programs exclusively, installiing the minumum components of OSX for audio recording; and install the full version of OSX on the other drive and use it for everything else? If so, what are the absolute minimum OSX components I should install (please be specific)?

Audio Files Location:
I understand that ideally audio files should reside on a drive other than my DAW software drive. Can that "other drive" be a different partition on the same drive, or must it be a physically seperate drive?

Partitions:
Should I partition the drive(s)? Both drives, or just one (and which one, the DAW or the Everything Else drive)? If so, should I make the partitions equal in size? If not, what size/porportion should the partitions be and why (again, please be specific)?

Formatting:
Should the drive(s) be journaled, and is there a specific order the optimization steps should follow?

Is there anything I've missed... Thank you so much for your time,

- evk

Install your OS and ALL applications on the smaller drive. Use the other hard drive for all your DP project files.

Refer to the previous answer.

You can partition your audio drive if you want.

Your system drive should be journaled, the audio drive dosen't need to be, but if it is, it's not a problem.
