ok, mabye I didn't ask my question right. I want to be able to certain songs (audio and all) as well as certain tracks from a very long live recording where many songs were recorded at once. I do have markers for each song.

How do I go about doing that so I can have each song be their own project and not retain ALL of the audio from the entire concert but just the audio from that particular song.

You will find some instructions that tell you exactly how to do what you're asking for. If they are not clear, tell me which part you don't understand, and I'll try to elaborate more clearly.

We record every week and as a result we wind up doing some of the same songs and I don't want to keep the songs that we do more than once in a month. We have already filled up a 500 GB external hard drive and we are planning on getting a terabyte hard drive but I want that to last a year, hopefully. The 500 GB drive filled up in about 5 months. I guess my real question is all about reducing the size of these large projects. They are currently coming in at anywhere from 8-15 GB each.

If you follow my instructions in that other post, and then follow the post I left just a few moments ago, you'll have your answer. It's an unusual dilemma, because you've accumulated so much data in one file. Splitting it up is going to take some work, but it can be done. It's not even hard to do, but it does take the time of going through the motions.

The 2nd post I made in that other thread tells how to eliminate unused soundbites. Until you have what you need, you will have to retain your original data, but once you have made files for all the songs you want, and saved their soundbites within their project folders, then you can throw out the rest.

By the way, you may want to check the manual for some of this info. I think it's in the neighborhood of pages 112-118, or something like that, in the DP 4.5 manual.

From your "master" project with all the songs trim all the data you don't want to keep. Go to the Soundbites window and use the "Select unused soundbites" and "Delete" operation Shooshie explained. THEN, Select All soundbites and use the "Compact Project" function. Compact actually creates new soundfiles from only the soundbites that are used and dumps the rest of the audio file. This will enable you to regain all the hard drive space. Then you can save out each song to it's own project.

I do this with live recording quite a bit, you just have to be careful because this is a very destructive process and you need to keep track of your audio file management.
