DP and MainStage on same MacBook Pro? Live playback thoughts...

Post by wonder »

Been a DP user since early 2000's. Although in my studio rig, I was forced to switch to PT, DP is still a part of my playback world when I need it.
I haven't done a lot of live playback in a while but I'm prepping for a show where I'm playing keys and performing along to playback tracks I've made.
I use MainStage as my keyboard rig.
How I've set it up right now:
  • M1 MacBook Pro
    MainStage for keys/bass/synth sounds
    DP for playback
MOTU Ultralite mk5 as my interface.
I'm routing the output of DP so my CLICK and CUES tracks are sent to my ears via the headphone jack (Headphone out)
Then I'm routing the backing tracks in DP to FOH via the Ultralite as well as feeding some to my ears (Analog 1-2)
I'm routing MainStage as a separate out to FOH (Analog 9-10)

Ultralite outputs:
1-2 FOH tracks
9-10 Mainstage
HPhone jack for mix of tracks and cues/click

The Ultralite is so great to have as an interface and mixer ... but my concern is this ... my entire show hinges on this 1 MacBook Pro. If it goes down, I'm S.O.L.

I've debated getting a Motif or other keyboard and use that instead of MainStage just in case my macBook goes down I have a backup plan of just playing keys/singing without trax.

Granted, most of these gigs aren't HUGE gigs but well-paying enough to where if I have a catastrophic event, I'd be in trouble.

Here's my conundrum ... if I go with a synth/keyboard for keys sounds OR decide to playback my tracks from a different MacBook (I have an old MacBook I can use), then I have to come up with a system where I can route all my sources to my ears to hear and stay in sync.

Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone do this sort of thing and if so, what's your setup?

You could have a 2nd (maybe used MBP) as a backup, and rather than running two computers, just run from the 2nd if the first fails.

Having a keyboard with built-in sounds seems pretty sensible, as well-- but I should disclaim that I've always been too much of a scaredy cat to gig with a laptop. I've done it a few times, and it it worked, but was more stressful for a variety of reasons.
M1 MBP; OS 15.3, FF800, DP 11.33, PC3K7, K2661, iPad6, Godin XTSA (w/ SY-1000), 2 Ibanez 5-string basses (1 fretted, 1 fretless), FX galore

I've been gigging with a laptop since probably around 2010? I ditched having to lug around Motif8. A small controller and a well-taken-care-of MBP has served me well.

I'm thinking of getting a Mod8 and taking the outputs of that and going into my Ultralike mk5 for monitoring purposes when running backing tracks.

Been awhile, Wonder. Good to see you!

I run MainStage for my live rig, too and it has been rock-solid on a 16GB M1 MacBook Air as a VI-only source. But I never have tried to run DP simultaneously. MainStage can host tracks as well as serve as your live VI host. Haven't tried to do that either.

How your computer will handle either approach is the great unknown.

If problems are demonstrated in testing, to minimize computer load and chances for glitches you can go with the two computers approach, blending audio with a little analog mixer with which you supply FOH and Monitor mix.

Thanks! Good to be back!

So I prepped for a week for a 1-man show night in Vegas ... hired for a corporate gig. Had eVERYTHING ready .... then the day of the show was hit was an intestinal bug. Unbelievable.

For any that are curious .... I did some tests and my M1 MBP ran DP and MainStage with no issues whatsoever. I will mention that in my DP session for playback tracks, I was running NO fx or processing. I mixed down stems and bounced them to stereo files (drums, BGVS, percussion, etc) and created a big DP session with about 30 Chunks, each holding a different song or medley.
I know the young guys are using Ableton Live for playback but I just love DP and know it so well.

The one thing I'd LOVE to do is figure out how to use DP like they use Ableton ... being able to trigger re-arrangements in a live setting. For instance ... wanna loop the chorus until you're ready to end the song? ... just press [X] MIDI control to loop the current section.

I did prep a backup computer just in case ... but I got sick the day of the show and this was all for naught. :vomit:
