Guitar Rig stopped working - returns audio error

Post by henrod »

HI, all. I recently bought Komplete 14 Standard and I use it with Digital Performer 10.13 on a 15", mid-2014 Retina MacBook Pro running 10.15.7.

I've used Guitar Rig Pro 6 for a few pre-recorded tracks on my solo gigs and everything has been working great until this past weekend. I've been getting the attached error, and when I Google it, it seems to have something to do with a known bug involving Guitar Rig and running in stereo. I run my show in mono, and like I said, it was working until it wasn't.
I deleted the plug-in component file and reinstalled Guitar Rig from the Native Access app. Digital Performer scans all audio plugins at startup, and everything passed. Still doesn't work.

Any ideas? Please let me know if there's any other info I should provide., and thanks in advance!

By the way... I have tickets opened with MOTU and Native for this. Native support sucks, so I don't expect to hear from them, and I fear that MOTU may tell me it's their problem.

So... I have GR 6.3 and that's the last compatible version under Catalina, apparently. There a 6.4 update that claims to have resolved some known issues with DP, including my issue. So... I'm not sure what to do.

My MBP can go to Big Sur, although that worries me . I've been using Catalina since its release and this machine has been rock solid with DP at home and on gigs. I also don't know if my Ultralite Mk3 (the original) will continue to work if I upgrade to Big Sur and DP11.

Anyone have any experience with this combo of hardware/software?

Thanks again.

You could try the VST version of G Rig before wading into OS arena.

My version of Komplete updated Guitar Rig 6 a week ago — have you run Native Access lately? Often, with NA updates, I need to shut down completely and reboot before they will load for verification.

I also received a license for GR 7 when I upgraded iZotope Music Production Suite. For kicks, I called GR 5/6/7 AUs this morning without a problem.

Thanks for the suggestion - it didn't work.

Hi Mike. Yes, I ran it several times, and I think the issue is that I'm running Catalina. Guitar Rig 6.3 is the latest compatible version and NA won't install a later version.

I missed that you were running Catalina. According to NI:
macOS 11, 12 or 13 (latest update)
I don't see anything for GR 6 on the Legacy Updates page, only GR 5:

Scott,
Your UltraLitemk3 uses the MOTU Audio Installer. You won't find the Big Sur driver on that download page because the unit is no longer supported but you will find it by going to the 828mk3 Hybrid page. Download this

My 828mkII works fine over Ventura with this driver; your mk3 will, too.

Mike,

My UltraLite Mk3 is NOT the hybrid - FW only. I'm hoping this driver will work. I have 2 - one for the home setup and one for the gig. It would be very expensive to have to replace both, especially if it's just to get Guitar Rig to work.

I wish I had another Mac to test this on!

THanks again.

Scott,

I think you missed that my 828mkII FW works fine over Ventura with this driver (through a few adapters). All early MOTU interfaces use the MOTU Audio Installer. MOTU no longer lists it for discontinued interfaces for fear it looks like they still support them. Tech support costs companies money and this was a business decision made a couple years ago. The 828mk3 Hybrid and 828x are among the units still available new that require this driver and, as you can see, there’s a current version.

MOTU will announce something about these and Sonoma soon. Either updates, this driver still works or EOL for the units that require it. We’ll know when we know. You will need a newer Mac before that’s your issue.

Not being affiliated with MOTU lets us post stuff like this when the official line is, "Sorry, you’re out of luck. Check out our current hardware."

The reason I bolded the correct driver is that we get people trying to use other drivers such as the MOTU Pro Audio driver that will not work for these ("Pro must be better, right?").

Thanks again, Mike. I just wasn't sure if you'd noticed that I don't have the hybrid, but I see what you're saying and I appreciate the help!

Hey, this stuff is confusing at best. I learned a lot of this administering Macs for a local school district as a part time side hustle (the PC guys were fullt-ime employees, of course). Anyway...

Run a Time Machine backup or a few immediately before updating to Big Sur and the driver and note the time of that last backup. You have a 24 hour window from that TM backup to roll your system back quickly with APFS Snapshots if you can't live with it. Miss the window and it's a full on TM restore as long as that takes.

Apple f%^&@#$ this up in Ventura but not your issue unless you hack your Mac—which I do not recommend.

Thanks again, Mike. Definitely no hacking for me - and certainly not with my main music Mac! I can live without Guitar Rig - I have BIAS FX, too, and that works fine. THere's a 15" MacBook Air in my future, but not until this old MBP decides to check out.

I think I found the issue over in the NI Support boards.

Native Access has been updating many VIs to versions that require Kontakt 7.6 even if the users do not have it or their OS cannot run it. So far, the answer is to be running K 7.6 — which misses the point completely. There are links for rolling back many VIs to earlier versions but I don't see that Guitar Rig is on those lists. They do recommend yuu contact Support if you fall through the cracks.

Lots of handwringing and opinionizing that NA shouldn't have to be expected to make this distinction.

Funny—Microsoft Auto Update knows to give an error message if your OS is too old to run the latest updates to Office (as yours is, BTW) and won't install the latest in that case. MS also makes all legacy updaters available for download—as I have a cottage industry maintaining 2012 MacBook Pros, I use that resource a lot. I think every school teacher in the Silicon Valley bought one and the word is out that I know how to fix and upgrade them.
